I was at the yale presentation and they said they take a "holistic" approach when considering admissions; meaning they look at MORE than your numbers..
what do u think about this? i mean obviously ECs and such count for something, but does that mean they regularly accept students way below the statistical mean???
or do u think this is just to encourage apps?

It means just what you said: they look at more than your numbers.
But that doesn't mean you can get in with lousy numbers. It means that that since they are looking for more, it will take more than great numbers to get in.
It will take great numbers, great ECs, great recs, and great essays, all pulled together into a great app that tells something interesting about yourself and reveals your passions.
Like they said: they look at MORE than your numbers....

On the one hand, I do believe they look at more than the numbers. For example, I know four students who applied to Yale from the same high school last year, and the two who were admitted did not have the absolute highest numbers (though the variations were slight; all four students' grades and scores were well within the statistical mean for Yale).
On the other hand, something has got to make your application stand out in order for you to be offered admission. In the above instance, the students who got in had the strongest ECs; in addition, one was a recruited athlete (admitted EA) and the other a legacy (deferred EA and admitted RD).
I actually believe the Yale admissions website describes the process accurately:
"Given the large number of extremely able candidates who apply to Yale and the limited number of spaces in the freshman class, no simple profile of grades, scores, interests and activities can assure a student of admission to Yale...."

hmm..curious.
but on the other hand, do u think students in the 2nd decile even stand a chance given they have the other things?
