because ED is binding and you can only apply to one school this way.
as for EA you can apply to as many EA schools as you want. UNLESS you are applying to a Single Choice EA school, then you can only apply to one SCEA school. schools like stanford or yale are SCEA, and MIT and caltech are not.
sooooo, you could apply to a ED school and as many EA schools as you want. or you can apply to just one SCEA school.
of course, if you get into your ED school, you have to pull all your other applications and go to the ED school.

Some schools stipulate that you can only apply to that school early. Also you do have to get your apps and attachments out early, and many kids just aren't enough on the ball and there is not yet enough pressure to get things going early.
also the colleges you like, may not offer early programs or offer only ED which can limit you. IT makes little sense to apply to schools that you do not want just to apply early somewhere.
