I'm also an international student and I'm going to UW-madison. I donät really know which is ranked higher between NYU and UW but I think they're both pretty good. I picked Madison cause it seems like a really nice college town. but if you're in for the big-city life you should go with New yORk. They're both good schools, I think you should pick the one you feel most for.

Note: University of Wisconsin-Madison's budget was cut by a LARGE percentage and tuition is set to increase soon. NYU is a much better school anyhow and will be more supportive of international students. UW-Madison is in the middle a very xenophobic region and is the drunken capital of Wisconsin. Plus, there isn't an ounce of culture in Madison and the students do not study at UW-Madison (they mainly party). I guess the only positive things I have to say about Madison are the two lakes are beautiful and the library system seems to be large (unused). To see the talk about the budget of UW-Madison, go to www.wisconsin.edu.

Not sure where Kenowhere gets his information, but I strongly disagree with him. I won't argue about which school is better. However, there are a lot of international students at UW-Madison and xenophobia is not a problem. The libraries are very busy places and most students work pretty hard. As far as partying goes, there is a lot of it, but probably not any more than goes on at most large state universities. The budget will be an issue and tuition will increase. But given the current economic situation, NYU will end up having to increase their tuition as well.

Madison, WI is undiverse (86% white campus, xenophobic (foreign students end up making friends with other foreign students leaving a very heterogeneous student mixture), and has developed a superiority complex much like that of an ivy-league school, except for one thing: they are not an ivy league school. I lived in Wisconsin and have visited the campus and have talked to several professors. I can see that the professors do not care about the undergraduates (asked other undergraduates there about this too) and it seems that no one can be taken seriously because of the massive number of students. You could go and ask for research but will never get it due to their research cuts (recent). As far as business goes, they will seek to fail you (like all mediocre state schools) due to the high volume of undergraduate business candidates. If you can survive this process, they will still pit students against each other and will not care about you until your senior year when you have proven yourself over and over again(I have personal sources on this). It is deplorable how many people don't take their studies importantly. Oh, and to back up my OBSERVATION (I've been on the UW-Madison campus several times, decided not to go based on these observations), visit Princeton Review's rankings of UW-Madison: http://www.princetonreview.com/college/research/profiles/rankings.asp?listing=1022774&LTID=1 I think this speaks for itself.

Oh, New York University survey results can be found here: http://www.princetonreview.com/college/research/profiles/rankings.asp?listing=1022976&LTID=1 I hope this will help you in making your decision.

do you love the packers? if not, consider NYU.

I wouldn't attend the University of Wisconsin on a bet. Consider the University of Illinois, University of Michigan, or the University of Minnesota. Each one of these schools are superior to the University of Wisconsin and are friendly to people of all backgrounds.

Thanks for your advices. however i still can't decide my mind. What about comparing to GSP in NYU. also, i got accepted Pepperdine Univ. and i am on waiting list U Michigan and Washington U in St.Louis. Should i wait for it??
What is the best shot for me???huh?

By Jfmiii2 (Jfmiii2) on Wednesday, April 16, 2003 - 01:51 am: Edit

Last year Michigan accepted 0, yes ZERO, people off of the waitlist(www.umich.edu). If you are deferred, that's another story. Wash U...I was accepted as a transfer, but am holding out for Mich or ND, so I am not going. But I know that if you make it known to them how much you want to go there and that you will enroll, I think you have a good shot. Oh, and another thing, Minnesota and U of I are not better schools. UW has a great B-school, and like most schools, its reputation for partying is over rated. BTW, I am considering UW as I was accepted as a transfer there too.

If you get accepted to Washington University, go. I've visited and it seems like an excellent university. Pepperdine also is excellent.

any other?

By Mreeves (Mreeves) on Monday, April 21, 2003 - 08:55 pm: Edit

Kenowhere, I disagree with some of your statements. Wisconsin is a very good school (I happened to live in Madison for a few years, and a friend attends the school). For a state University, it is ranked very high (higher than Illinois) and there ARE international students there. From what I perceived, most of the students fit in VERY well. The business program is rigorous, but well worth it. Aaaaaa, New York University's program is probably about the same, and I would say: go for whichever one you feel you like better (I'm assuming that you have visited the colleges already) and go for it. Good luck!

Thanks A Lot!

The UW is one of the finest public schools in the US. The students are generally very friendly and the many international students are welcome. The school is outstanding in the science research areas and is the #1 state university for research in the US. The business school has a great new building and many excellent specialties including direct investing of pension fund money. Madison has many fine restaurants and is building a Pelli designed civic entertainment center just blocks from campus.
BTW Michigan faces a similar budget situation as do most state schools. UVa had a 40% cut over the last two years--much worse than the proposed UW cuts of 10%. The UC system may not be able to pay its bills due to a broke state.

Further evidence that students at UW-Madison do not care about their studies. Accounting students (60 of them) caught cheating on take home exam: http://ap.tbo.com/ap/breaking/MGAG49WXWED.html

UW-Madison's business programs are not horrible, but at the same time, they do not compete with the likes of NYU. I would seriously consider attending NYU due to the fact that you will probably receive better job placement coming from a University that will prepare you with more internships (NYU is positioned in an excellent location for business).

By Aaaaaa (Aaaaaa) on Thursday, April 24, 2003 - 11:23 pm: Edit

Kenowhere. i'm sure that i will go NYU if i was accepted to Business program. but i only got admission from GSP. even if i study two years in GSP, it is extreamly hard to transfer to Stern. it is kind of wasting money, isn't it? That's why i'm going to Wisconsin. And if i get accept from waiting list of U Mich, i will go for it.

Anyways Thank you guys!! And Good Luck!!

Here's some news from UW you did not use.
Accounting Grads Among Best in Nation on CPA Exam

UW-Madison accounting graduates excelled on recent national CPA exams. School of Business graduate students were ranked second in the nation for the May and November 2001 CPA exams on all subjects. When it came to auditing, they did even better, ranking first in the nation on both the May and November auditing exams. The results are according to the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy.

The latest results continue UW-Madison's long-tradition of producing exceptional accounting graduates. Between 1992 and 2001, the School of Business was ranked third among all schools in the country in percentage of undergraduate students passing the CPA Examination. School of Business graduate students were ranked seventh over the same period.

Yeah, "undergraduate students passing the CPA Examination". Woo-hoo!

By Fonzie (Fonzie) on Sunday, July 20, 2003 - 04:07 am: Edit

this is the most off the wall crap, ever. Not only are many of the anti UW remarks that I just found completley unwarranted (ie: xenophobia), but the idea that princeton review's rankings = only way to determine the type of atmosphere is nonsensical. On a strict ranking paradigm, UW wins because it is ranked 1 higher than NYU in the US news and world report rankings :). However, because UW is a large university, you can find any group you'd want.

Obviously this doesn't help "aaaaa" anymore, but I think Kenowhere is a little, misguided.

By Fonzie (Fonzie) on Wednesday, September 10, 2003 - 12:38 am: Edit

this still makes me sick. Such unwarranted crap
