Just confirming, but, am I allowed to apply to both MIT and Caltech EA (i.e. they're both not single choice EA)? Also, what is the recommended number of optional/extra recommendations to send?

yes, you can apply to both ED. Neither one invites extra recs (beyond the required two). They don't give you an extra form to use. But it's probably common for people to send an extra one, particularly if you have someone who knows you in a distinctly different capacity (like maybe a sports coach). Two extras is probably too much unless there's a really compelling reason why you need a total of 4 (like maybe a homeschooler who does not have a lot of grades).

about the extra recom, a peer letter would be alright?
