Brown Vs Cornell
How will you rate these 2 universities for a double major in Engineering and Finance

By Bn37 (Bn37) on Friday, April 11, 2003 - 08:23 am: Edit

cornell all the way

Bn37 -
Can you give me your reasons too. I thought Brown is a better location and more respectable.

engineering is so much better at cornell than brown.

By Ndhawk (Ndhawk) on Friday, April 11, 2003 - 06:16 pm: Edit

it depends what field you want to go into, and i would say brown is a better location, the brown campus i'd have to say is better than cornell's overlooking downtown providence on college hill, cornell is in the middle of nowhere, and due to it i've heard it has one of the highest suicide rates, but for engineering yes cornell, they're both ivy leagues and both respectable

Brown generally has a better reputation for undergraduate teaching (Cornell is too big, and many classes are set up so that professors teach in big lecture halls a couple times, then the rest are in small groups taught by grad students/TA's), more student-professor interaction. Retention rate is higher at Brown. Suicide incidents are fewer at Brown.

i'm familiar with both schools -- attended brown for a summer program last year, and i'm attending cornell this fall.

i didn't even apply to brown. it was really nice and all, but eh... doesn't compare to cornell in my mind. i gotta say one thing -- the food at brown was BAD!! i'm sure their a la carte-type stuff is decent, but for dining hall food, ugh.

brown's in providence, so they say you have to be super careful cuz people around the area have gotten raped. i encountered a few creepy people while walking around, other than that it was fine. the mall downtown is awesome, but it's a hike if you don't take the bus/trolley. but really, i didn't think brown was too special. the location didn't really sell it to me either.

i know that cornell's engineering program is really good. it really depends on what you prefer, size and location-wise. cornell is much bigger than brown, obviously. people say cornell is in the middle of nowhere, but there is SO much to do on campus that it really doesn't matter. it's like a mini-city within ithaca, and it's absolutely gorgeous. you have a view of the lake and waterfalls/gorges. plus, it's a lot safer than other schools that are in big cities [i.e. brown].

food at cornell is ranked #1 in the country, or so they say. i had some when i visited, and it was great. i think the dorms at cornell are a whole lot nicer than the ones at brown [although i did not see all of the dorms at brown]. collegetown is easily accessable, and it has clubs and such just as providence has. plus, there is a mall nearby.

bleh, cornell gets too much hype about suicide occurrences just because of the method used -- sure, kids get overstressed and jump into the falls/gorges or whatever. but how often does this actually occur? not that much... it just gets publicized more because it's a whole lot more interesting to hear about people killing themselves that way than by any "standard" methods. i certainly wouldn't base a college decision based on this.

they say cornell's tough and competitive, which may be true... but with over 4000 classes to choose from, you're bound to find some that really interest you and don't drive you to the point of suicide or anything crazy like that. i sat in on a lecture class called "the history of rock music" and it was quite impressive. the professor played music in-between giving notes. although it was a lecture, it didn't feel like you were in this huge class. there are a lot of lecture-classes at cornell, but we were told that every class is taught by a professor -- not TA's or grad students, although they may assist the class.

another thing -- i spent a day at cornell, and ended up asking some students walking by where to find certain places on campus. i was amazed at how nice everyone was -- it was absolutely astounding. everyone is just so incredibly nice. i can't say anything about brown students, since i was only there during the summer... but you can only hope they're that nice. actually, we were just walking around the cornell campus and 2 girls stopped us and offered to give us our own personal tour. crazy.

so yeah, i'd go with cornell. it was the obvious choice for me. i guess it depends on your preferences though. brown = smaller, more prestigious, in the city; cornell = bigger, better campus, better food, more rural. good luck with the decision :)

BROWN ALL THE WAY

cornell is the worst school. i would never ever ever ever go there, its so miserable, and the winters there are awful.

all cool kids go to brown. like me.

My son is planning to do a Double Major in Engineering and Finance / Economics

By Ivykid (Ivykid) on Monday, April 14, 2003 - 09:24 am: Edit

Engineering and Economics? That's got Cornell written all over it.

I'd rate them,

ENGINEERING
Cornell 8 out of 10
Brown 6 out of 10

ECONOMICS
Cornell 7.5 out of 10
Brown 5 out of 10

Cornell is known worldwide for both of these programs/majors. Brown is stronger in other areas.

By Apguy (Apguy) on Monday, April 14, 2003 - 10:36 am: Edit

I agree. Brown is a good school, but Cornell is much better in these fields. Brown's engineering is not even comparable to Cornell's.

I say Cornell.
