They have like a 6.5% acceptance rate this year.
Did they put everybody else on waiting lists? All my friends who applied there got put on the waiting list.

Almost everyone who has posted here about Wash U was waitlisted.

what are your stats? (gpa, test scores, etc.)

Don't worry if you are waitlisted. Washington U. in St. Louis has one of the lowest yields of all selective colleges. In other words, over 75% of those who get it go somewhere else. That frees up space on the Wait List (which is usually massive, to account for the fact that it's not easy to account for spaces when so many turn a school down... compare this to Penn, where 62% take them up on their offer and you can see how much easier it is for Ivy schools).

Our daughter was waitlisted at Wash U. with a 3.95 unweighted GPA (4.2 weighted), top 2% of class, 1570 SAT I, 35 ACT.

wow Medusa..you daughter should've gotten in..I got in with a 4.02 GPA, top 2% of my class, maybe it's the extracurricular stuff..? I was also National Merit, but that shouldn't make much of a difference. I may not go though since my parents refuse to pay so there'll be an opening.

Hey, I got accepted too by Wash U. (Don't worry too much Medusa2003)
In regards to the first post, Wash. U. didn't have a 6.5% acceptance rate; that stat is a bit misleading. They meant that over 20,000 applicants were competing for about 1600 seats. They probably had a 20-25% acceptance rate instead because of Wash. U's incredibly low matriculation rate (only 30% of those admitted actually enroll).

Just an interesting tidbit about Wash U: their admissions policy isn't need blind... I thought that was really interesting when I read it in the Student Life (the newspaper at Wash U).

"their admissions policy isn't need blind"
THAT MAKES ME SICK!

What are the chances you'll get off the waitlist? How many do they accept??
| By Svansviek (Svansviek) on Thursday, April 24, 2003 - 04:37 pm: Edit |
A lot of rich jews go to wustl and their families can pay the full fees upfront ( I know, because my brother goes there. He thinks it's like 30-40% jew). I was accepted there.

Svansviek, your post really comes out the wrong way. Also, how does that post pertain to this thread?
Ks2882, last year 4888 were accepted out of 20,500 or so applicants. Of those 4888 prospective students, only 1272 enrolled. Their freshman class is limited to about 1600-1700 students; therefore, they probably took off 400-500 students off the wait-list. That's why most wait listed students don't have to worry that much about getting admitted to Wash. U. If Wash. U. is your dream college, let the admissions officers know! This downtime is your chance to gain the favor of officers.
(Just a tidbit here)
Furthermore, two people in my class, including me, applied to Wash U. I got accepted and the other guy got waitlisted with a 1270 SAT I and a 760 SAT II Writing.

They may not be need blind, but they didn't accept me. 3.9GPA, 1360 SATI, 31 ACT, and I got two A's when I took courses there in the summer of 2002, plus I need no financial aid whatsoever. It was unfortunate, but I did get into need-blind UChicago, with a much better econ program, where I will be going. Though I was still shocked I was rejected from WashU, but things happen.
I was talking to an Econ professor at UChicago the other day about the two schools, and he told me the problem with WashU is that while an excellent school, it seems as every student there is going there because thier top four choices didn't choose them.

I agree totally 4546ham. Wash U has an infamous reputation for being a Midwestern Ivy League bound student reject college (I include myself in that aforementioned group). It really is an unfortunate situation because Wash U has a cordial atmosphere, excellent academic standards, and a wealth of opportunities for research. I almost decided to go there, but I chose Northwestern instead. (I guess I helped in furthering that status for Wash U.) Maybe in a few years, as it gains in reputation, they can surmount that dubious label.
In addition, you're right you should have gotten in. You seem like a way better applicant than that other guy who applied from my school.

i graduated HS with a low GPA, dropped out of 2 AP classes, highest on my ACT was a 22, didnt take the SAT, was in the top 25% of my graduating class, no clubs, i was like #70 something out of #300 or #298 in my HS class of 2001, and I got in to WashU, how you ask? one word: TRANSFER!

Hey, you guys, don't fuss about wash u too much. I live in St. Louis and the kids here often joke about it too. For one thing, I know that Wash U, wait-list alot of over qualified people. I mean, if they think that you're likely to get into a better school and go there, why should they waste an admission letter and risk a higher acceptance rate? After all, 10 or 15% of US News rankings are based on selectivity. However, if Wash U. was your first choice, you should've have applied early decision. Otherwise, if you're in the waitlist limbo, you can just call them up and tell them you really want to go there. When it comes to financial aid, although they are n't need-blind, it doesn't mean anything. They have the second largest endowment in the country. My friend got a 1600 on her SAT, and when they only gave her 4,000, she just went in and asked for more, so they doubled it to 8,000. The point is, Wash U. tries really hard to seem high and mighty, but they're really a softy inside. Oh yeah, I really didn't appreciate that comment about rich jews. I go to a school where there is a very large jewish population, and most of them aren't rich. In fact, they're just regular middle class families who have to strain like everyone else to pay their children's tuition. So don't just assume that the rumors you hear are true.
