Hey who dares to compare number of rejections with me?
I got rejected to all the schools i applied, Harvard, Yale, MIT, Stanford, Caltech.
All rejections. No waitlists.
I did all of my best, but get rewarded by "we are sorry to tell you that we are unable to offer you admission to class of 2007."
Oh, god!
I feel my eyes are been filled with tears now.
I don't think i'm that bad for hell.
My stats are not for HELL!!

Those are all you applied to? Didn't you have a backup?
In any case, it doesn't matter. You obviously are not a failure. I got rejected from all but two schools that I applied to, as well- rejections from Stanford, Columbia, and Swarthmore. I think you just have to realize that up to a certain point, it's all up to luck- literally, admissions people will draw a name out of a hat.
Just go on and succeed and prove them wrong.

Any acceptances?
Not to offend you, but a 1330 doesn't really put you in the range of Harvard, Yale, MIT, Stanford, Caltech. Its a long long shot for any of em.

You were supposed to have target schools, safety schools and reach schools.
What happened to your safety schools?
By Amylase (Amylase) on Wednesday, April 02, 2003 - 08:41 pm: Edit
I crazzzzzy you know.
I don't have any safety schools.
THe only thing i can do is to do applying stuff all over again this year.
you have any suggestions on how should i improve my chance of getting in?
you know how much i appreciate that
By Tangclan (Tangclan) on Wednesday, April 02, 2003 - 09:10 pm: Edit
Hong Kong applicant. Same here. Rejected everywhere: Harvard, Yale, MIT, UPenn, Cambridge, and Stanford (my first choice, on my 18th birthday).
I'm going to my last choice. Cornell.
I know how it feels, especially to be in the Chinese society where everyone is going to start looking at you differently now that you're done.
My stats:
SAT 1490. Chem 780 Writing 710 Math IIC and Physics 800 gpa top 5% of extremely competitive private school in new hampshire. Decent ECs, but no national stuff.
Well, chill out. Try Bei Da or Qing Hua and show them what's up.
By Amylase (Amylase) on Wednesday, April 02, 2003 - 09:17 pm: Edit
thanks for your compassion.
you went to a private boarding school in US?
which one?
I didn't take gao kao, and don't know how to get in Bei Da or Qing Hua, and don't want to get in there.
what do you mean by "show them what's up"
again thank you for your compassion
it helped alot, psychologically.

Hey Amylase, don't feel so bad..
You can totally try again next year and improve your chances.
Take this year off and plan ahead. You have a WHOLE year to build up a new application and get into the school you want.
This coming year make great plans. Do something very meaningful that you can put on your resume. Do research and find out what you can do.. travel to a developing country? Do community Service? Do research?
Second, study like a MANIAC for the SAT and boost your score to a 1500+ - that will give you an edge.
Take the SATII again and do the same, boost your score as high as you possibly can.
Begin to think about a new topic for your essay and have someone help you edit it and revise it.
Visit the schools you want to attend and find out more about them.. you can totally do it again with more experience.
I know of people who never went to college, and at age 30 decided to apply, and were able to get into Yale and Harvard. It's not the end of the world if you didn't get in this year...
Keep trying and best luck.

As my dad said, "Well, when you BUY the school a few years down the road, you'll show them." Haha. My recommendation is go to a community college and get awesome grades. Then apply transfer next year. Good luck!
By Nocalguy (Nocalguy) on Wednesday, April 02, 2003 - 09:19 pm: Edit
I'm sorry, but with those test scores you're going to need excellent ECs to get into the schools you applied to. Those are top, top notch schools. You probably should have chosen some traget and safety schools.
By Failure (Failure) on Wednesday, April 02, 2003 - 09:22 pm: Edit
Rejected from MIT, Harvard, Columbia, UPenn.
Left me with only one choice, UVA.
Guess I won't have to deal with the hassle of choosing which college to attend....

really appreciated your suggestions.
Well, i'm not a senior. sophomore or something, if went to school, but homeschooled, but plan to go back to school(though it will be more advantageous)
I'll try all of my best to boost everything up.
thank you really, though, i couldn't possibly know your real name or who you really are, but i'll remember you guys.

After the entire application process, I wonder how important a 1500+ score is - hardly I'd say. With a 1580 and good extracurriculars, all I've received from each of the top colleges (MIT, Stanford, Harvard, UChicago, UPenn, Cornell) is a letter that starts with "We are unable to offer you admission "...
Now all I have left is Princeton and Caltech - which again will send me their share of reject letters.
On the brighter side, I made it into USC and Harvey Mudd - but the funding is far too less. Is there any chance of external sources of funds for international students?
By Amylase (Amylase) on Wednesday, April 02, 2003 - 09:35 pm: Edit
You got 1580 and still rejected?
that's aweful!!
By Kelly_Johnson (Kelly_Johnson) on Wednesday, April 02, 2003 - 09:38 pm: Edit
Canadian schools are still accepting applications. I am sure you could get into McGill. It is called "the Harvard of Canada"

1580 and no aid!
well!i am indian and international;and looking for some aid myself.
if u d get any aid info for international students
then could u please post.
Thanks.

By Ryuji (Ryuji) on Wednesday, April 02, 2003 - 10:56 pm: Edit
I don't know what's really up with the international applicants this year:
My stats: SAT I: 1530
SAT II: 800M2C, 750Chem, 730Writ
Took GCE 'A' Level
top 5%, great recs, quite a lot of Ecs
and Community service n a number of
awards.
Indonesian Chinese
major: chemical Engineering
Rejects: MIT, Stanford, Berkeley, Cornell, UCSD
Accepts: UCLA, Univ of Illinois-Urbana Champaign
Pending: UW-Madison, Caltech
Very likely I'll get my rejection letters from caltech.
You know after the war began, All I got were rejections, which makes me wonder: Are they scared of Asians( especially those from Muslim Countries) or they're just plain racist!
Especially now that many ppl in my country are so much against USA n its allies.
There may be political reasons behind every admission process that we may not know.
By Amylase (Amylase) on Wednesday, April 02, 2003 - 11:13 pm: Edit
Hey Ryuji,
you said you are pending at caltech, but let me tell you what.
I called caltech and they said they already e-mailed acceptances to internationals on March 28th!
So you are either rejected or waitlisted.
sorry for that.
but i'm even worse than you(if you have not already seen), i got in nowhere.
By Nocalguy (Nocalguy) on Wednesday, April 02, 2003 - 11:29 pm: Edit
Ryuji, with those stats, you should get into AT LEAST Berkeley, UCSD, and Cornell. Sorry about your bad luck. But if you're going into engineering, Illinois is a great school to go to.
By Louisa (Louisa) on Thursday, April 03, 2003 - 04:49 am: Edit
Amylase, even if you're international, you had almost no chance whatsoever of getting accepted to those schools with a 1330 on your SAT's!!! seems like you aren't so familiar with ivy admissions.. people with perfect SAT's, good recs and good GPA get rejected at Ivy Leagues quite often! and there are no exceptions to internationals!!! unless you are an URM, legacy or athlete, your chance of getting in was like 0.001%... I mean IF you had that score and was one of the best violinist in the world, or is the son of a mogul or something like that, maybe, but.... apparently you're not... You only applied to reach schools, not even one 50/50 school, let alone a safety school.. where are you from? so you have to reapply next year, huh?? that's terrible... remember, you may not get in ANY of the ivies, please apply to safeties! for your own good...
By Amylase (Amylase) on Thursday, April 03, 2003 - 05:28 am: Edit
thank you louisa really,
your advices are very helpful to me.
If i work my ass off to boost my SAT to 1500+, what would my chance like then?
By Dragonium (Dragonium) on Thursday, April 03, 2003 - 06:42 am: Edit
Amylase, you should have applied to some "safer" schools... You see, at first I worried about my college choices : UIUC,Umich,CMU,Berkeley,MIT,Stanford, Caltech.
I learnt from USnews.com that all of them have good reputations in engineering and any other program... This made me apply to the engineering top ten univeristies and sometime I thought whether I could be accepted by one of those, as I am an international student.
However, I was lucky enough to get 3 out of that 7 (I didn't even think ever again about Caltech, so I's just say I was rejected). Though I applied to many top schools, I still had some "safer" school compared to MIT and others of its level (I'd say them : UIUC, Umich, and CMU). And, I got all of them.
All you will get to do now is searching to good universities you know and at which you still have chance to. Don't bother about US institutions decissions on you, but try to study at university level this year, and try to transfer to the US next year... I hope you'll be successful and not depressed anymore... Good Luck to you!

Phillips Exeter Academy. Its considered as one of the most rigorous academies in the world. I took hard courses and was top 5% of my class gpawise too.
Well, for international applicants I guess its even harder. If Stanford has to reject 82% of its applicants who have unweighted gpa of 4.0 or above, you better have perfect grades.
Woh, I don't even know if I should start doing my SATs all over again now that the last time i did them was a year ago. And, unless I qualify for USAMO, what am i thinking about in applying as a transfer.
"Show them what's up" - to win a Nobel Prize or something like that.
By Amylase (Amylase) on Thursday, April 03, 2003 - 07:27 am: Edit
Hi! Tangclan
Phillips Exeter?
I have heard of that school, it's great.
As far as i know, its a very good boarding private prep school, and it accepts homeschoolers and internationals right?
May be i'll go there for 11th grade, but it's pretty expensive, as far as i know $30,000 per year!
Can you tell me something more about admission to Phillips Exeter?
Can I get in there with my stats?
By Kluless (Kluless) on Thursday, April 03, 2003 - 09:26 am: Edit
If it is any consolation, I got rejected from CalTech.
By Tangclan (Tangclan) on Thursday, April 03, 2003 - 12:57 pm: Edit
are you only in 10th grade? How are you applying for college???? well, go to www.exeter.edu
I'm not sure how they treat mainland students, but they take in a ton of hong kong students, like we have 20 in the whole school of 1000.
But again, just look at me, going to Exeter won't exactly help you get into college. Its pretty expensive, but you can apply for financial aid, but it will be really difficult.

and why did u apply to only the most prestigious names- cant you see beyond that?
were u so sure of urself that you figured u would get into one of the most selective schools?
really u should hav had a backup
its ok chill out and next year ull get into the school of ur dreams
