Well, I have been wait-listed at Caltech. The NSTA just came out with its April newsletter to science teachers, and one of the articles in it was about the national ExploraVision Awards program in technology. I was one of 6 10-12 grade winners from U.S., Canada, & US Territories. The article describes the competitive nature of the program. Should I send it to Caltech to show my accomplishment and improve my chances of being taken off the Wait List?

If they don't already know about it, by all means. One of six people from who knows how many -- might want to mention how many *are* comepetitive in the award, though if the NSTA knows about it I'm almost positive Caltech does -- is a very, very good thing. They like to see national-level awards, and this one sounds interesting. Mind explaining what it is?

Thanks.. One more question though. You see, since I am on the Wait List, I have a lot of time to turn in additional stuff. I should probably send everything in by May 1, though. Well, on April 23, another article about this same competition will come out. That one will feature pictures of the winners (including the team composed of my partner and me) and is in USA Today. USA Today certainly sounds better than just NSTA newsletter. So should I just send in both of them or wait and send the USA TOday one when it becomes available?

Rowan -- there were over 5,000 entries (over 5000 teams participated). A team could have 2-4 students. The total number of students, from all teams, was around 15,000. I found the contest and then invited my friend from a nearby school, so we just had two people on our team. Of these 5000 entries, 24 were selected as finalists. They were judged in 4 grade levels, k-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12. So, of course, there weren't 5000 entries in our grade level (10-12), but I am sure there still were quite a few. Now, we are competing for a trip to DC and $10,000 US Savings bonds (per person)... And a presentation of our technology and prototype in DC...

So?

1) NSTA -- send it NOW!
2) USA Today -- wait and send it after the 23!
3) BOTH! NSTA now, USA Today later

Maybe you could send in the NSTA thing now, with a letter saying that it will be in USA Today, which you will send on the 23rd. Maybe you could also include a sidenote, just saying how much you want to attend. Doing all this will definitely show them your interest in going to CalTech. Good luck.
