Waitlisted!! *sigh*
Got deferred EA, so this is just drawing out the process. Thin letter, I could see the outline of the waitlist card from the outside of the envelope. I didn't expect it to come so quickly, I live in Western Mass, about 90 minutes outside of Boston.
Anyone know how many people they waitlist?

ADMITTED!!!!!!!!!
Received the mail just now, It's not alphabetic since my surname starts with T, I guess they send acceptances first.
Here's a copy of the e-mail.
Congratulations!
Dear Applicant,
On behalf of the Admissions Committee, it is my pleasure to offer you admission to the Harvard College Class of 2007! You were identified as one of the most talented and promising students in one of Harvard's most competitive applicant pools ever. Your commitment to personal excellence and principled goals made you stand out as someone who would not only contribute to our diverse community, but would also thrive within our academic environment. We really like your initiative and style and believe that we are well matched for each other.
We hope that you will choose to attend Harvard this Fall, for we believe that, just as you have much to offer our community, we have much to offer you. Harvard University is a vital, vibrant community. The learning environment here is not only intense but also dynamic, challenging, and very much "hands-on". At Harvard you will be actively engaged in your own education, and you will find that the opportunities for learning and achievement are virtually limitless, both inside and outside of the classroom.
You will receive a comprehensive admissions package in the mail within the next few days. If we can answer any questions or assist you in any way, don't hesitate to contact us. We look forward to welcoming you to Harvard University. Once again, congratulations!
Sincerely,

Hey Cuspidor, how did you find out that you were rejected from Harvard after receiving that "admittance" email? Did you get a second email? Or through snail mail?
So was that email a prank? What happened? Please tell us what happened! I'm so intrigued by this situation. Who could be sending those deceiving emails?
And to Dxiw:
"ummm, EHLO bs1-07.fas.harvard.edu ... thats a harvard server...hello?!?!"
I KNOW that is a Harvard server!!!
I only posted that server to show what a REAL email from Harvard return path would look like. Cuspidor, as you could see, got something different:

That's Optonline, not a Harvard server. In other words, I was ascertaining that his email MUST have been a prank of some sort, ok?
What a horrible JOKE!!! if you can call it like that...
So no Harvard admitees so far?? How sad!!

Amylase- I got rejected by Stanford, and waitlisted by Harvard, Yale, Wharton. Hope that makes you feel a little better. Have no hope for princeton now. Guess its between duke/dartmouth/cornell/rice for me. Leaning toward duke.
By Jasontoff (Jasontoff) on Wednesday, April 02, 2003 - 09:06 pm: Edit
I don't know who would do a prank like that...because most pranksters likely wouldn't know that today is "d-day". Also, how would they know that you applied?
Then again, the line: "We hope that you will choose to attend Harvard this Fall, for we believe that, just as you have much to offer our community, we have much to offer you. Harvard University is a vital, vibrant community." is kind of redundant with the word "community"-- I was kind of expecting really extravagent language from Harvard....or maybe they're "keeping it real".
I'd say it's real.
By Hildegard (Hildegard) on Wednesday, April 02, 2003 - 09:10 pm: Edit
To the above,
My guess would be that the prankster is probably smart enough to know that today is d-day, and also smart enough to surf the web and find a copy of a Harvard admission letter that he could simply cut and paste.
First I thought that Harvard might have made a mistake.. however, I doubt that's the case, because they would have sent it from their own server, not from Optonline.
By Calibeachboi (Calibeachboi) on Wednesday, April 02, 2003 - 09:17 pm: Edit
I have been calling other friends to see if they got accepted, and if they did what does it look like. Cuspidor did you only get one e-mail decision sent?
Another thing is that why is my name not in the acceptance letter, why is it only written as "dear applicant" as far as i know it all acceptance letters that i have received have my name on it. I still dont know if i got in or not.
By Hildegard (Hildegard) on Wednesday, April 02, 2003 - 09:20 pm: Edit
Hey Cali,
Could you post the returning path of the acceptance email you got from Harvard?

By Chronoshock (Chronoshock) on Wednesday, April 02, 2003 - 09:44 pm: Edit
That Harvard letter closely resembles the MIT acceptance letter. Then again, a lot of acceptance letters look like each other... Anywho thought I'd point that out:
MIT first paragraph:
On behalf of the Admissions Committee, it is my pleasure to offer you admission to the MIT Class of 2007! You were identified as one of the most talented and promising students in one of Harvard's most competitive applicant pools ever. Your commitment to personal excellence and principled goals made you stand out as someone who would not only contribute to our diverse community, but would also thrive within our academic environment.
(snip)
We really like your initiative and style and believe that we are well matched for each other.
(snip)
this part is probably altered and you can tell. Ad-coms wouldn't say "really like"...
The MIT text reads as "At MIT, you join kindred spirits: scholars, builders, entrepreneurs, and humanitarians. We are well matched for each other."
My opinion? It's a fake and a pretty mean April Fool's joke (and late).

If it's a prank, how did they get everyone's e-mails and colleges? And why the heck would they want to do that?
I think one feasible answer is: some sadistic prowler of these boards has WAY too much time on his or her hands.
But I'm not pointing fingers, b/c I'm just guessing. lol

I attended Harvard Summer School for 2 summers in a row. I got straight A's in all my classes. My optional recommendation letter was written by a Harvard Summer School professor. And yeah, I got rejected. I figured this much from a school that smells like a freakin cesspool. (I'm not kidding. They had some septic tank problems over the summer.) So, fellow rejected people, consider yourselves lucky and proud to be rejected from Harvtard.

By Calibeachboi (Calibeachboi) on Thursday, April 03, 2003 - 02:29 am: Edit
Risenbright, no offense but you look like the typical applicant. If they were to read your stats they probably ask "what will this student add to Harvard?" However, i do admire your involvement. Have you persued any researching or something that separates you from the applicant pool. Like for example if you are really interested in film, how about taking a film history class at a college or participating in a film festival or teaching film techniques to local students. These ofcourse are suggestions, and you might have a pretty good chance at making it. If you want to know more about the Ivy's and the admission procedure i would highly recommend reading A IS FOR ADMISSION by MICHELLE HERNANDEZ. good luck!
By Cuspidor (Cuspidor) on Thursday, April 03, 2003 - 04:29 am: Edit
Indeed I received tw different e-mails, one at 4:05 pm, saying I was accepted, the prank, and one at around 8 pm saying I was rejected. The second one had my name and my address written on the text body, and the server was definately Harvard's.
I'd kill that damned prankster for doing this to all the people who received it. Imagine those who didn't realize it was a prank before the second e-mail arrived. It's sad.

Wanna see a real REJECTION letter, read it and R.I.P:
Dear Mr. XXX,
I am very sorry to inform you that it is not possible to offer you
admission to the Class of 2007. I wish I were writing to report a
different decision, but the competition was so rigorous this year that
there were many outstanding young men and women to whom we could not
offer
places in the class.
Nearly twenty-one thousand students, a record number, applied for the
sixteen hundred and fifty places in the freshman class. The great
majority
of the applicants could certainly have been successful here
academically,
and most candidates presented strong personal and extracurricular
credentials as well. The Committee was, therefore, faced with the
necessity of choosing a class from a great many more talented and
highly
qualified students than it had room to admit.
We wish it were possible for us to admit more of our fine applicants,
and
we understand how difficult the college application process can be for
students and their families. While the Committee conducted its
deliberations with the utmost care, we know that no one can predict
with
certainty what an individual will accomplish during college or
beyond. Past experience suggests that the particular college a student
attends is far less important than what the student does to develop his
or
her strengths and talents over the next four years.
We very much appreciate the interest you have shown in Harvard College.
We
hope that you will accept the best wishes of the Committee for success
in
all your future endeavors.
Sincerely,
William R. Fitzsimmons
Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid

Hi everyone,
It was a long run but I got the thick packet I had known about since '91 and '92 (brother and sister got in those years)
To those who are at least 75% confident that they will attend Harvard:
Tell me about yourselves...NOT STATS OR SCORES! Doesn't matter now...more about your personality, dreams, goals! Anyone from Socal? My brother is on the HRCSC Board and found out that 104 ppl from SoCal were accepted...
Congrats once again!
P.S. To those who were rejected, you were most likely qualified to get in...this means you'll be a success, but at another school--they'll be the ones boasting about you in 10 or 15 years, don't worry (sadly, I received rejections from Stanford and Yale and am looking forward to either Cambridge or NYC or maybe Berkeley).
By Mell (Mell) on Saturday, April 05, 2003 - 10:24 am: Edit
Soccerfrenzy: So, you got a thick packet from Harvard? Or, you didn't apply, and you plan to go to Cambridge/NYC/Berkeley? Just a tad bit confused...
I got waitlisted by Harvard, do you or your brother know how often they use their waitlist, and whether I should bother making phone calls and writing letters, etc.?
I do agree with the last part - with the way qualified Ivy-rejects are flooding the rest of the schools these days, we should all look forward to strong, diverse classes wherever we end up.

I may be wrong, but it doesn't seem like athletics help very much on ivy league apps. Unless of course you're a recruit. I was VERY involved in athletics (4 year varsity wrestling, 3 year varsity football- 1 JV, and 2 year varsity baseball- 2 JV). I was also captain of the football AND wrestling teams. I had the regular high stats and other great ECs, and I was even from a rural southern public school in NC, AND a first generation. I was still rejected from Yale this year. I guess that just goes to show.
