If I am thinking of going to community college and then transfer, do you guys know what community college can transfer the students into a prominent college most like Ivy Leagues? (Basically, what is the best community college nationally?)
By Nyguy (Nyguy) on Tuesday, April 01, 2003 - 10:30 pm: Edit
Westchester community colleg is supposed to be excellent. They recently transfered a student to Harvard. Also since its in Westchester it has a decent amount of funding

I live in Westchester and I do know that Westchester Community College has transferred several people to Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Penn, Stanford, Cornell, and NYU.
Actually, I personally know of a girl who transferred from WCC into Yale like 2 years ago, who happened to meet a guy at Yale, who had also transferred from WCC to Yale!
BTW, I found this online document regarding WCC transfers for those interested:

WTF?!?!?! There's not way you people live in Westchester. It's a relatively small suburban county outside of NYC. Hildegard, do you live in the north or the south? Have you ever heard of Ardsley?
By Incognito (Incognito) on Wednesday, April 02, 2003 - 12:32 am: Edit
Actually, I really dont believe you people. If you REALLY live in Westchester, then tell me HS basketball championships take place....

I live in Westchester too... I don't care for basketball at all so I couldn't tell you about championships...

I live in Sleepy Hollow in Westchester. Why wouldn't you believe me?
Believe it or not, even "relatively small suburban counties outside of NYC" DO have inhabitants! I know it's something hard to believe, but nonetheless, true! And I don't think it is as "small" as you put it.
BTW, I have no idea where Ardsley is.. I know cities or "towns" like White Plains, Tarrytown, Chappaqua (hey, I live close to Hillary Clinton!), Armonk, etc..
And I don't know anything about basketball..
By Incognito (Incognito) on Wednesday, April 02, 2003 - 05:03 pm: Edit
Hmm...All right. I believe you, because you have no reason to lie about something like this. I'm just really surprised that other people on this forum live in Westchester. I mean, what a coincidence! I live in one of the river towns (Hildegrad, surely you've heard of Ardsley or Irvington if you live in Sleepy Hollow). Anyways, I just think that it's really cool. But getting back to the discussion here, Westchester Community College is actually extremely reputable for a CC. I read an article a few months ago about how they don’t deserve the conventional stigma of a typical CC. Sanj, you could probably get lots of info from a google search. You may find some fantastic articles on great CCs. Who knows? There could be a top CC in your area...

Wow, tons of Weschester folks here! I'm from Rockland (New City, attend Ramapo HS).
I know that RCC has a good honors program (you go there as a freshman and skip senior year), although this doesn't really help you.
By Nyguy (Nyguy) on Wednesday, April 02, 2003 - 05:37 pm: Edit
lol im just outside of Westchester - Brewster High School, We wrestled at Ardsley before and SLeepy Hollow is generally at the indoor track meets our school fequents - small world huh? well since westchester is one of the richest areas of the US, it makes sense that a lot of people are from Westchester on this board
By Tim (Tim) on Wednesday, April 02, 2003 - 06:49 pm: Edit
Tons of poor areas in Westchester too...
Tim
By Incognito (Incognito) on Wednesday, April 02, 2003 - 07:00 pm: Edit
Yonkers = "poor"
Bronxville = REALLY wealthy.
I'm sorry, but does anybody else here think that the fact that so many people live in Westchester is really strage? makes me think...
As for the basketball question, if anyone cares, then answer was White Plains...
(BTW, I'm not rich)...

wow, very off the topic so far!, well anyway, thanks a lot for the tips here. I really appreciate you all for informing me about Westchester and Westchester seems great community college after I visited its website. It seems that all of you guys live in east coast, but I actually live in CA. Are there excellent transferring community college to ivy leagues in CA? k,never mind if you cant answer my question cuz you live in other states. Are there any excellent CC besides Westchester in any other states then? Thanks..

no, come to westchester, its the best CC, and you can get an apartment for around 400 a month about an hour up 684. Pawling New York is a very cheap town to live. If one really wanted, it would not be difficult to attend WCC from an hour away and study and get into Harvard. In fact had i not been accepted to an ivy I would do the same
By Dr_Clark2 (Dr_Clark2) on Thursday, April 03, 2003 - 11:07 pm: Edit
WOw, are you serious? You can get a room $400 a month?!!! Dang! hmmm, wait! but isn't it hard to get an apartment? ok, to be honest, I still have a little doubt. How can you be sure that Westchester is the best CC? There are no stats or national rankings proven among the Community Colleges.
BTW, I have one more question. Do I have to enroll Westchester for fall term or is it ok to enroll in jan as a freshman in order to transfer to ivies?
DO they have a stat how many ivy students they have sent so far?
By Incognito (Incognito) on Thursday, April 03, 2003 - 11:11 pm: Edit
Well this whole thing really is crazy. Westchester. Who would have known? Well, anyways, if you want a cheap place, check out Yonkers (no offense if anyone lives there, but some parts of Yonkers just aren't very wealthy). I'm a senior. I was not going to go to school next year. Does anyone think that I should even consider WCC??? I mean, if it's a really good CC, and if I live right here in Westchester, then wouldn't that be considered giving up a fantastic opportuntiy?...
By Hildegard (Hildegard) on Friday, April 04, 2003 - 03:37 pm: Edit
Did you get accepted at any college? Or why aren't you going to college next year?
By Incognito (Incognito) on Friday, April 04, 2003 - 03:44 pm: Edit
I never applied to any schools. It's a pretty long story. The main reason I'm not going to school next year is because I still have to take the SATs and do well enough on them (I'm trying to satisfy my standards). I'll take the test this May and/or June. Because it's obviously too late to apply to universities, should I just go to WCC?...

Santa Monica College or Community College is really good. Also, it is in Santa Monica.
By Dr_Clark2 (Dr_Clark2) on Sunday, April 06, 2003 - 09:31 pm: Edit
so do Santa Monica cc send many students into ivy as long as a good decent candidates?
By Hildegard (Hildegard) on Sunday, April 06, 2003 - 09:37 pm: Edit
Incognito, I would say take this year off and work HARD on your SAT's and SAT II's and try to add a few things to your resume. You would have a long year of free time to do lots of stuff that would make you look a lot better, so use that time wisely and creatively.
Personally, if I were you I would not go straight to WCC unless you got rejected by the school of your dreams or if you had done terrible in high school and couldn't get into college. WCC is good for people who can't afford state schools, or who didn't do great in high school, or are undecided as to what to do.
If you are able to do well on your SAT's, just go for it and start getting things ready to apply for next year. IF you did bad in high school and are almost sure you don't stand a chance at your dream school, then go to WCC, do great there, and then try to transfer.

I hate Westchester.
But then again, I'm from Rockland. :-)
Actually, I specifically hate the Westchester schools' fencing teams. They have mad funding, and so much better equipment than we do! I don't even have my own freaking glove, I trade off with my teammate!!!!
Oh well. THAT was off-topic.

hmmm, I have two question about Westchester CC. I really wanna know how difficult to get the apartment or housings near the campus. Also how much would it cost if I get a room. I want to know the good approximate costs of apartment. One bedroom apartment is great!

Sanj2002, where do you currently live? I don't think it's that hard to get a place in Westchester. Look at: http://www.nypennysaver.com/
That's the classifieds that runs all through Westchester, so you should be able to find something there. You can make a few phone calls to get more information on the rooms/apts.
By the way, the WCC campus is really nice and quite big. Check out the faculty at WCC, lots of professors went to Columbia and NYU and most have PhD's. I know of an English teacher at WCC who used to teach at Columbia University and NYU. The president of WCC teaches a class at Columbia as well, and another teacher used to teach at Johns Hopkins. So, the faculty is good.. and the college has a pretty good honors program.
Good luck

Hey Sanj2002, thinking about your situation, I don't think that you necessarily HAVE to come to Westchester Community College in order to transfer to an Ivy League School.
I mean, it's not like WCC is the only community college in the country that transfers students to Ivy Leagues.
Actually I have an article about someone who tranfered from a community college in California into Yale.
Check this link:
http://www.yaledailynews.com/article.asp?AID=18146
I don't think the particular community college matters. Just find a good one in your state, and work as hard as you can there.
I don't think the admissions officers will vote in your favor just because of the school you come from. I think that is the least important factor in your application, as long as the college is decent. If you have the grades, the EC's, the essays, the scores, a passion, and something special that catches their eye, the particular community college you attended won't have any weight.
Just make sure that the community college you enroll at has a history of transferring students to Ivies. After that, whether it is WCC or XCC, that won't matter.

dude, it's all about the SALT LAKE COMMUNITY COLLEGE!!
God they produce geniuses, just last year there were 5 harvard transfers, 13 Princeton, 30 Wash U med. and 19 Yale and 21 stanford and the list goes on. You should like really check it out. I wonder why nobody's heard of it.
I hope you have fun at Salt Lake community college... if you get in

I've heard of Salt Lake Community College. You should also check out the College of Southern Idaho!!! Especially if you are into intercollegiate athletics!! (Home of the winningest Junior College Basketball Program and the 7 times championship volleyball team). Last year there were kids that got accepted into Stanford and Harvard. It is also really affordable and offers tons of scholarships!

The best community collge in America IS considered to be Miami-Dade Community College in Miami, Florida, with campuses in downtown Miami and Kendall, Florida (south of Miami). Graduates of thier elite (by CC standards) 2-year Honours Programme go on to schools such as Boston College, Lehigh, Emory, and, believe it or not, Harvard and Cornell.
