So I got into the two summer programs I applied to...Pennsylvania Governor's School for Global Entrepreneurship and Wharton's Leadership in the Business World summer thing. Here is what I know about each of them:
Governor's School: I'm one of 2 kids to get into this in my "region" which includes 10+ high school (my high school alone has 2600+ kids)...so I am pretty lucky/fortunate/whatever. This program is free (paid by PA) and very prestigious
Wharton: About 50-60 go from all over the world (with hundreds of applicants). I originally got waitlisted and then got in-- they say that they had amazingly-overqualified applicants...hmm...I want to go to Wharton for clg most likely... its $4,000 but money isn't really an issue.
On my application for colleges can I write that I got into Gov. School? Is that commonly done?
I appreciate any feedback.
p.s.- sat scores arent everything....I got 1470sat and 1520psat, but two of my friends (1560 sat and the other, 1540 psat) didnt get into gov school...so I guess they look at other things for anyone who wants to know!

Jasontoff-
I didn't apply to the governor's school, but I did apply and got my acceptance letter today into the Wharton LBW program... it did say something about the applicants being over-qualified.. interesting. Anyway, I'm not sure if I'll be going either, but we'll see. Let me know what you decide. Peace...
P.S. I take the SATS for the first serious time on April 5th... on my LBW application, i just included my PSAT scores of 214 composite, so evidently SAT scores don't matter a whole lot to them for that program anyway.

I have a 4.0 unweighted GPA in a highly ranked public IB highschool... I therefore have a weighted GPA of like 5.0 since all IB courses are weighted, etc. I have decent extracurriculars such as varsity football, NHS, spanish honor society, community service, and president of my service club. I wrote a good essay and I'm confident that my teacher recs were good as well. A really interesting thing happened to me though. I just got back from my college touring trip, in which I visited Upenn for wharton... we (my parents and i) actually went by the office where they do the LBW admissions place, and asked if they'd evaluated my app yet.. the main guy wasn't there, so some lower- down woman in the chain checked the computer system, and told me that unfortunately, my teacher recs hadn't been assessed yet and therefore they hadn't made a decision on me... BUT when i returned home last night I found the acceptance letter in the mail. Very odd, still don't know what to make of it. What were your recs like?
| By Jasontoff (Jasontoff) on Thursday, March 27, 2003 - 09:55 pm: Edit |
I didn't get to read my recs from the teachers...I just saw the first line of one that said "it is with great honor that I...." and the other teacher said to me "I wrote your essay...it was very easy to write a great essay about you!" or some bs...and my guidance counselor really likes me so her rec was probably good.....actually my cousin who graduated from Wharton recently sent them a letter reccomending me. I don't think it was my recs that got me in though...nor my essay-- I think everything else was what they wanted though.
Where do you live hightower?

Yeah I gotcha. I'm still debating on whether or not to do the program... see I'm not totally set on going Wharton undergrad, I have some misgivings about it having just visited and having been scared shitless by the info session. I do hear that a ridiculously high number of applicants who do the program wind up getting into undergrad at wharton when they apply.. have you heard this as well?
I'm from the area around Tampa, Florida. And you?

Hightower is a cool name. Hey, wasn't that reverend in William Faulkner's "Light in August" named Hightower?
(sorry for the randomness of this post)

Lol, no idea. Some friends just call me that because I'm tall. It's used for lack of a better name online.

Jason-
I just sent in my deposit to Wharton yesterday... looks like I'll be going.

hightower -- sorry about the delay in responding --- I'm from Allentown, Pennsylvania (about an hour from penn)...which I thought might hurt when applying to the wharton summer thing because they brag about the diversity of the kids in passed years -- from around the world and whatnot...but fortunately it didn't hurt me too much!
I had not heard about the "ridicuously high number of applicants who do the program" who go to wharton undergrad...but I imagined going to this program would certainly help my chances at undergrad admission. Do you know anyone that applied to this program and did not get in?
Good luck on April 5th SATs - I am taking them on the 5th (but as my 2nd time) as well

I don't know anyone who applied and didn't get in.. I was the only one I knew who applied, so... I think I remember hearing somewhere that their acceptance rate at the summer program was somewhere around 30% but that could be off.

heyhey this is ashley here
got into the LBW too
i didn't send in my SAT scores but i took them after i sent my application in
for some reason i got in
but yeah, i guess i had a decent resume.
hey you guys have ANY clue what this program is about? i have an internship at goldman sachs before the camp and i'm deciding whether to work longer, or to attend the program.

You can actually see the class schedule for LBW on the upenn website if you do a search for the summer programs... it looks like it will be good if I have time in summer to do that. It's all business related stuff... write a business plan, see the stock market, simulations, etc. That internship is cool, congrats.

hey, ppl, my name is Dave O. from NJ. i've had my heart set on wharton for like 2 years now, i go to a public magnet school called bergen academy. we dont have ib (well we do but i am a year to old for it, the freshman got it) and there's no weighted grades, next year will be junior year and i project that when its done i will have a 3.8 out of a possible 4.0 which obviously isnt AMAZING, but i didnt work freshman year and most of sophomore year and finished frosh year 3.6 and soph year 3.7. Sat's will be between 1550 and 1600. 1550 now w/out having memorized the vocabulary. I am on Future Business Leaders of America and have won various competitions and next year I think I will win at States. I am also going to be going out for Debate and am told that I will be captain of tennis team (starting junior year). Finally I run a school store called the Cyber Cafe that basically sells different chocolate bars, soda etc, good stuff to all the kids w/ about 150-200 in revenue daily. So now my question to you folks is: what chances do you think I have at Wharton if I go early decision? 25? 50? please send me an e-mail, because that way I will def. get it. olkdavid@optonline.net thank you so much. any guidance you can give me is greatly appreciated.
Dave O.
