I'm getting anxious too! I live in Maryland, so it's probably not going to go so well, but worth a try!

I checked the website...nothing posted

Did any of you who *didn't* have an acceptance posted yesterday get an acceptance today? I'm trying to figure out if they are just posting slowly or if they posted all acceptances at once and the rest are rejections.

i have a 3.96w gpa with 1300sat, 700 avg. SAT2s. mine's still pending. but people with 1200 sat and 3.8-3.9w gpa seems to be getting in with eaze. what's up with that?
By Thedad (Thedad) on Saturday, March 22, 2003 - 04:32 am: Edit
Stats are not the whole story, that's what's up with that. Fwiw, avg. SAT for UCSD is around 1260. Or was. So 1200 isn't cause for raising eyebrows nor is 1300 in the other direction.
If admissions were entirely formulaic by stats, we could eliminate the whole "What are my chances?" topic.
By Jdm2000 (Jdm2000) on Saturday, March 22, 2003 - 04:37 am: Edit
the 1200 sat and 3.9w gpa is one of my friend. and he has almost no ecs, he doesn't work, and he is not an athlete. what other factors could there be that determine his admission? the other factor that i could think of is that his family is hella rich

Essays? Recs?
By Ephnayllie (Ephnayllie) on Saturday, March 22, 2003 - 02:09 pm: Edit
Well, UCSD -- all UC's for that matter -- don't require recs. Could be that he wrote a stellar essay though...
By Thedad (Thedad) on Saturday, March 22, 2003 - 04:26 pm: Edit
Also, for UCLA--but I think other UC's as well--they have more qualified candidates than they can take.
Which his why there are few slam-dunks and why there's not a hard line with "winners" above and "losers" below.

anyone know for certain if they're doing rolling admissions?

my other friend with 1400 sat, 750 avg sat2, science olympia, math team, track, and crosscoutnry...didnt get in either.
however,
this guy that had like 3.3 gpa and 1200 sat and avg 600sat2 got in...thats just gay... his extracurricular is not that great either

By Hautbois (Hautbois) on Monday, March 24, 2003 - 05:14 pm: Edit
Here's one:
3.7 unweighted GPA (4.-something weighted)
SAT: 1430 (800 verbal , 630 math)
SAT 2: 740 writing, 640 math1C, USHist 740 (plus other high scores but they only take 3 and as you can see this student isn't quite as strong in math)
four years of: Mock Trial, JSA, JCL, NAHS, choir
Other:
community service, Tai Chi (with medals), art awards
rejected

"ucsd is pretty gay... "
Maybe they don't want folks who think 'gay' is a pejorative.

By Techie (Techie) on Monday, March 24, 2003 - 07:34 pm: Edit
I am very angry and frustrated. UCsd was my dream school. I visited it a couple times and I had my heart set to it. I don't understand why they rejected me. FVCK. My majors were Biotech and Biochem. But I was sure I would get in for BioChem since it's not impacted and go on as pre-med.
Well FvCK me! I got into UCLA, USC and UCI but I can't believe I didn't get sd. Unbelievable
By L76 (L76) on Monday, March 24, 2003 - 07:50 pm: Edit
Someone with a 1090 and 590/540/420 for SAT II's but a 4.00 UC GPA got winter quarter deferred admission to UCSD. He had ELC, though.
By Crackcorn (Crackcorn) on Monday, March 24, 2003 - 08:40 pm: Edit
Why was UCSD your dream school over UCLA?
So far, I'm in at UCLA, UCSD, Cal Poly SLO and USC. Among those choices I'd say UCLA has the best reputation.
By Brd (Brd) on Monday, March 24, 2003 - 09:46 pm: Edit
Crackcorn: Reputation is useful, but only so far; in the end, if you want meaningful information, you have to critically compare schools with respect to how good they are in your specific areas of interest. Techie says he wants to do biochem and biotech. Well, UCSD has just about the best biophysics and bio-sciences departments anywhere. The Scripps Institute is there, as is the Salk Institute. Another good measure is to look at how much research funding comes to the school for research in your area -- lately the NSF has been *shoveling* money at UCSD for bio-sciences research.
Akoolguy: Well, congratulations. I also just got into UCSD (their graduate physics program), but I am going to turn their offer down. So I guess I won't see you around campus. Drat.
By Akoolguy (Akoolguy) on Monday, March 24, 2003 - 10:18 pm: Edit
haha brd did i say i am going there? go do ur physocs so that u can become a physics teacher. if ur lucky u mite end up at some high class private schools teaching my future children.

Actually you guys are very wrong, the UCs definetly look at ECs. My friend's sister got accepted, she had like a 4.6 GPA, 10xx SAT. But her ECs were insane. She did more than most of the ivy kids. She got accepted to all the UCs, and she went to Berkeley.
By Brd (Brd) on Tuesday, March 25, 2003 - 01:39 am: Edit
I certainly won't try to find your every mistake Akoolguy, as it is evidently an unending task.
By Bumblebee (Bumblebee) on Wednesday, March 26, 2003 - 03:50 am: Edit
well, i think it seriously depends on which major you chose when you applied to ucsd. biomedical engineering at ucsd is obviously going to be much harder to get in. maybe those with not as high scores or 'stats' applied into other less competitive majors..
somewhat off topic question:
what do you guys feel about ucsd's computer engineering program? how about structural engineering? right now.. i'm accepted to ucsd for CE, but i sorta want to switch to SE instead (if possible) would that be a wise thing to do? i think i'll like structural engineering more, but it seems that CE is pretty hard to get in. what do you think?
