bump = Bring Up My Post
If there is a thread in which nobody has written anything for a long period of time, then the thread falls because updated threads go to the top of the list. So, a thread in which there are no recent posts falls and falls until it becomes "dead." By "bringing up a post" you essentially "refresh" a thread. It goes back up to the top of the list. People see the thread because instead of being the 20th item on the forum, it becomes the 1st. So, it essentially brings a conversation back from the "dead"...It is an attempt to revive a conversation.

I was about to ask the same question... Bump just looks dumb. But ESSENTIALLY, it makes sense.
