member, national honor society
member, key club

I think every damn kid in american has those on their app, it's so repetitive, what's interesting to top universities, ie. MIT, caltech, princeton, harvard etc.?

be a bagpipe player
have a passion for collecting license plates
be a native Latvian speaker
have your own software company
be homeless AND do community service
publish poetry in THE NEW YORKER
be appointed to your city's transportation commission

Stuff where the adcom folks say..."We haven't seen one of these for a while!"

I don't think someone is boring just because of their personal interests. If you aren't interested in stuff that IVY league schools consider GREAT than maybe you just aren't cut out for the school. Most of us aren't and that is why most of us won't get in.
