How does the ELC program (Eligibility in the Local Context) work for the University of California school system?
I know it has something to do with the top 4% of participating CA high schools.... Can someone explain the details of this program?

Here's a simple answer to a complicated question:

Thanks Kubakloth! I was also wondering though if any CCers got accepted into or had an edge b/c of the ELC program.

I am an ELCer.
accepted:
UCB(Spring Admission)
UCSD(Winter Admission)--they're on the quarter system
UCI(Chancellors scholarship 7k a year, Campuswide Honors Program)
Rejected:
UCLA
4.11 UC GPA
sat1: 1350
sat2: 660 710 750
6 APs in HS,
4,3 on junior yr AP exams.
ECs-decent but nothing really outstanding
white middle-class, no hardships
Polisci major
So there ya go. Do I think ELC helped? definitely. I seriously doubt that Berkeley would have given me the spring admission had I not been ELC. I also think that it was a factor in Irvine giving me all those perks. Anyways, I am going to UC Irvine next year.

Spring Admission...Winter Admission... what's the difference? I know a freshman can't just enter in the middle of the year... but do the classes continue on or only last for a specific quarter or what?
I always thought there was only fall admission and that's it. How does it work if you're accepted at 2 diff schools for spring and winter, like you Yackityack.

I'm not sure if you have any more edge with the ELC program than without. I didn't do ELC (I'm in the top 4%, but I forgot to fill out the form) and I got into LA and Berk. I think if you were admitted to a particular school with ELC, you can get in without it. Looking at Yackityack's stats, he was a very competitive and qualified applicant for all the schools to which he was accepted, so I'm not sure if he's a very good assessment of the effect that ELC has on admissions.

At least at UCSD and UCB they defer admission to some people. So of course I applied for the Fall but I guess I wasn't a good enough applicant so they said I could accept their offer and just not start going to school there until the spring for berk or winter for SD.
Anyways, I considered going to Cal with the spring admission but ultimately I realized that I wanted to start in the Fall like normal college kids and Irvine was offering me some good stuff. Actually I wasn't notified till after i accepted Irvine that I got into the CHP. So that just made things better. it was like I wasn't good enough for berkeley but I sort of was. anyways, thats my story.
As for ELC helping? I think it did, but there isn't a way to know for sure anyway.

Big plus for being ELC? Half of the UC application is already filled out for you online!
