im planning on transfering after my freshman or sophmore year.....i understand that not all credits get transfered to other colleges....i wanted to know what classes i should generally take so that i might have a higher chance of getting the credits transfered....i plan on doing dentistry so most of my classes will be science-orientated......thanks

It really depends on the colleges (the one you are currently attending and the one you plan to transfer to). I would like to say that generally the CORE classes will transfer at least somewhat, but even that isn't absolute.

I'm sorry that I couldn't be more help, but it really does depend on the schools involved. I'm currently attending comm college and plan to transfer, and the transferability of my credits are different at almost all of the schools I'm looking at. For example, any of my state schools will accept all of my credits (up to 60) for transfer because of the guaranteed transfer agreement in Colorado.....but this only applies if I take the classes that are specified in the agreement. Another school I'm looking at, Reed, will not accept all of my credits and I need to meet with the dept head to figure out which ones will transfer.

To make it even more confusing, with both examples above, different schools will accept certain classes as replacements for required basic courses or they will only accept them as electives. Again, this differs from school to school.

Yeah, those are core type classes. Any intros to basic subjects will most likely transfer; avoid interdisciplinary or "unique" sounding courses; what you want are courses which will have an equivalent at the school to which you transfer.

Also remember though that even though intros to basic subjects will probably transfer, you won't necessarily receive credit for them toward your degree.

As an example, the degree program that I currently am working on has College Algebra as a CORE requirement. If someone doesn't test into College Algebra then they have to take an introductory course (or sometimes two or three depending on their test scores) and this does not count toward graduation. So even though you get credit, it doesn't count toward the total credits required for graduation.

Check with your transfer college for the equivalents at their school for the courses you're taking. Many of the CORE type classes will transfer: Algebra, Calculus, Biology/Chemistry/Physics, English, etc (the schools tell you which classes are CORE--at least they do in my experience).

Since you are planning to have mostly science/math related courses, it is really important to check with the transfer school.

Also, a tip for transfer students: keep all college catalog information for the classes that you take at your school, as well as all of your class syllabi, homework, tests, papers, etc. This way you will have something to use if you need to petition your transfer school to give you credit for a class that you believe is equivalent.
