I recently discovered that residence dorms at my college close from December 11 to January 8 and from May 7 to August 18. Are students supposed to go back to their parents during this time? What would happen if a student's parents do not live in the same state or if they are internationals?

Have you asked the college? A friend of mine attends a private college here and they have a similar policy but they do have an option for those who can't leave to pay extra and stay in one of the dorm buildings (one they keep open for this reason). They don't "advertise" that (they don't want people to take advantage of it when they have other options).

Cool. I was just surprised. I guess they don't want students getting too home sick or messing around while school's out.

Mostly, students are expected to go home after finals for winter break (usually within 24 hours) and for summer as well.

Yeah... So do most kids just go home? Are there any foreign study programs for the summer (my college has them) or other options?

Usually they keep one dorm open during the winter break (but it's not much fun to be one of about seven people on campus, with the dining hall closed, etc.). Students typically either go home or move off campus (especially for the summer--it's common to sublet apartments for the summer months).

The universities usually kick everyone out during certain periods (i.e. spring break and winter break) for mainly economical reasons. It costs a lot of money for staff, heating/cooling, electricity to keep buildings open even if only a few people are in it. However, I'm sure the school will make arrangements available for students who, for one reason or another, can't leave during the break... alhtough this will probably require living somewhere different than your normal dorm room.
