Almost every college asks it, and I never hear about how to do it right here. If any successful applicants could tell what they did, or what they think works, I think that would help a whole lot for us juniors. Thanks.

For essays that asked why I picked my major or their school, I started with a story, and gave thought-out answers that I felt strongly about. I can't really tell you what to write, but give you advice to have it straight from the heart, and have at least 3 other people read it--probably teachers. You can make it a really personal experience.

My only advice is to think about the adcom. He or she has been sitting there for hours reading these bland essays about the "great academics, gorgeous campus, involved students" and blah blah blah. Find things that not every student would write, things that are specific to you. The more you know about the school, the better. They can probably tell when you've just picked up buzzwords from the brochure. Don't use platitudes.

Also, don't ever mention prestige.

My essay was about my career choice and about my character and family. I did mention about going to a place with elite students and a school full of history and tradition
