I just got back from a Yale information session that I attended in my area. It was given by one of the actual admission people and was a question/answer type discussion. Just thought I'd share some of the things I learned about the whole process with you.
- A big thing to note about your essays is that the reader hates it when you put down others or boast yourself at the expense of others
- When opening your application packet, after seeing your initial EC list, the first thing they do is read your essays... make them count to build momentum
- Relax during the interview... the alum is on your side. They want you to get in just as much as you do. Its not a rigid question answer session, it's more of you giving a monologue to the alum. He or she will ask you a general question and you should be prepared to talk about yourself and ask questions too.
- Some good questions to ask the interviewer, at least with Yale, are: "Why is Yale so much better than Harvard" (obviously a lighter comment
) and "What college were you in?" (college as in the division within the university, the house). If you want the interviewer to talk a lot, ask him that second question especially
.
Hope that can help!
