I know that it is very important to colleges that you be active over the summer. I was wondering if doing an internship with a local political campaign would be good. I think it would be very cool but then again my focus of study is more oriented toward business/economics rather than government. Do you think that matters?

Do what you love, i.e., what "would be very cool." Understanding the political process will always help you in the business world. There are all kinds of public/private partnerships that develop in communities. You'll get a better perspective on what each needs to meet its goals.

Colleges know that most students will switch their majors four times. What impresses colleges are people who follow their current interests and passions over the summer. Thus, I agree with Midwestener. Do what you think is "cool." Later, you can find a career that fits it or you can fit it into your career.

If you are going to have fun doing it and learn something, go for it. You'll become more informed about politics, learn a lot, meet people, and get some resume experience.

I'm with NorthStarMom about colleges realizing that students change their majors. Also would like to add that many schools don't want kids who are only focused on their majors, but would rather have kids who have many interests and can bring something to the classroom. Politics and economics are very related.

Finally, as an alumni interviewer, I would like to say that doing things which you find to be the coolest and most exciting will help you more than just doing something because you think it will look good. Enthusiasm, or lack thereof, is very easy to see during an interview.

yea, it'll be fun for you won't it?

think of it this way. think, "what would i rather be doing" and if you can come up with a TON of things - no, don't do it. but if not, you know you want to do it.

it's doing WHAT YOU WANT TO DO that counts. and you'll learn plenty in the process. my friend did that last yr.
