hm, thanks. How good is columbia university for economics? Since it's in NYC, i presume there are lots of internship and good summer jobs avaliable for a economics major, right?

Economics is incredible at Columbia. Very well known for economics.
By Nabo (Nabo) on Sunday, June 06, 2004 - 03:39 pm: Edit
Harvard, Wharton, and Uchicago are probably more prestigious than Columbia for economics, but the difference is so marginal it's essentially negligible. If your credentials are up to snuff, you would better focusing on the particular school that can fit your needs. While my intended major is still uncertain, I was considering the econ major. I found Columbia to be the best for fit for me. Although Boston, Phila, and Chicago have loads of opportunities, it's hard to argue with Wall Street. The course offerings at Columbia are quite nice, as you are allowed to take graduate courses from the Columbia Business School. Furthermore, with such professors like Jeffery Sachs, you have the opportunity to meet with the best and the brightest.

can the same be said for these schools for a finance major too?
By Scubasteve (Scubasteve) on Monday, June 07, 2004 - 12:57 pm: Edit
absolutely not
finance is a business specific major... thus it is only offered out of schools with specfic undergrad business colleges
out of the schools listed above, the only ones with undergrad business colleges ie. finance majors are wharton and mit
these are generally considred the top 3 undergrad finance programs
1. University of Pennsylvania (Wharton)
2. New York University (Stern)
3. University of Michigan–Ann Arbor

wharton offers econ??
i thought the college at penn offered it, wharton is a biz school, and as far as i recall biz schools dont offer econ
By Scubasteve (Scubasteve) on Monday, June 07, 2004 - 02:40 pm: Edit
good point.. wharton doesnt offer econ... however ssome biz schools do
for example: nyu cas offers an economics major and nyu stern also offers an economics major more focused on business than theory

wharton has no econ major. Econ is liberal arts and wharton is not liberal arts.
Stanford (most nobel winners in dept), Chicago, Harvard, mit are some of the most prestigious for econ.

Would MIT look at a sloan undergrad applicant differently from one going into engineering? are there different standards?

NO!
Rochester has no business undergraduate program. Major in economics, go to grad school for MBA in finance.

CAS = College of Arts and Sciences. The liberal arts college at NYU.
I don't think Georgetown has an undergraduate business major. I could be wrong.
By Scubasteve (Scubasteve) on Tuesday, June 08, 2004 - 01:52 pm: Edit
gtown has an undergrad business college... Mcdounough School of Business
Its OK .. not as great as you would expect from a gtown school.. us news ranks it like 27th i believe
the real jewel of georgetown is its school of foreign service
