Hi, I was just wondering how prestigious Berkeley is. When people ask me where Im going, they get amazed when I say Berkeley, but some others don't think of it so highly. So what comes to your mind when you hear Berkeley?

As a parent and much older than you guys - I think of druggies and hippies bc that was their mark of distinction in the 70's.

By Noodleman (Noodleman) on Friday, June 04, 2004 - 08:44 am: Edit

You must be older to realize that there is a difference between druggies and hippies! As I'm sure you know, the hippie movement grew out of the "beat" movement and was political and intellectual in nature. The drugs kinda killed the whole thing.

Oh well.

Today's lame excuse for hippies can generally be found outside of Phish shows doing nitrous oxide and protesting showers. Then they go back to their cushy little suburban McMansions and act sullen and misunderstood while downloading contraband Grateful Dead tracks into their I-pods.

Gee! That was a rant, wasn't it!

I just get irritated that the concept of "social conscience" has become so lost in commercialism and navel-gazing.

Frickin MTV.

Oh. What do I think of when I hear Berkeley?

"Good school," I guess.

The Graduate

By Clipper (Clipper) on Friday, June 04, 2004 - 12:09 pm: Edit

I guess I should be old enough to know the difference between hippies and druggies but I was raised in a conservative east coast household that supported the war etc so when my mother would talk she would make disparaging remarks about the druggies and hippies on the west coast (not that there weren't any on the east coast too). I went to college in the midwest and they were pretty conservative there. The California lifestyle was so foreign to me at the time - still is I guess. LOL
I did not mean to offend anyone - just gave my 70's opinion!

Hard work. Great home football -- GO BEARS. Superb outdoor concerts at the Greek Theater. What are you younglings talking about re: hippies and ghetto?? Hippies don't work their butts off, and that's what you have to do at Cal. Real hippies were long gone by the time I got there in 1978. There was a naked guy... and a guy who lobbed tampons out of one of the big urns at Sather Gate (I believe it was a political statement of some kind), but nope, no hippies. For tree huggers, you have to go up the Coast. Lots of forest folk up there, but not in Berkeley. There are more Starbucks and furniture stores in Berkeley than there are trees. Ghetto?? Are you kidding? Telegraph Ave has some of the most expensive stores & businesses in the Bay Area. The area around the university is urban, some call it grungy chic, but not ghetto. Good rant, Noodleman. McMansions...heh, heh.

Curtisny-

"i wouldn't consider any state school as something to write home about...

And William Hung got in there...come on"

Really nice post. You'd be surprised how many people are proud about going to Berkeley and how many parents are proud to send their children there. Do you have any idea how many people I've met that actually believe Berk is a better school than Columbia, Dartmouth, Northwestern, etc. I'm not agreeing or disagreeing, but people think that.

William Hung may be a laughing stock of the nation, but he is an engineering student at Berkeley. Berkeley's engineering program is top notch. He may have been a very good student.

By Curtisny (Curtisny) on Saturday, June 05, 2004 - 05:26 pm: Edit

the question was "So what comes to your mind when you hear Berkeley?"

what i put was the first thing that came to mind, hotshot...what, did they reject you or something?

Curtisny,
Need to really take a look at your attitude, if you have the ability to receive a 4 year degree at any college it is something to write home about.

but for Berkeley I do think of dirty hippies

By Mosquito86 (Mosquito86) on Sunday, June 06, 2004 - 02:14 am: Edit

Curtisny,

No I wasn't rejected from Berkeley. I guess you are from NY. I believe a lot out of state residents are ignorant about how UCs are viewed upon in California. Berkeley isn't some random state college here. I'm not saying it's a wonderful undergrad institution (it has quite a few flaws), but it certainly has a good reputation all over the world.

for those who are wondering, the milk and cereal boys are two asian freshmen at berkeley (i guess they'll be sophomores in the fall) who made a video about milk and cereal (cheerios to be exact) if you haven't seen it yet, you should here's the link.. I <3 them!!!

Haha, that's so retarded. Are they the ones singing or is that some recorded song?

By Jer728 (Jer728) on Sunday, June 06, 2004 - 12:00 pm: Edit

Wow, they should team up with William Hung and make the worst singing trio in recorded history. Also, not only did Hung get into the school, he is studying at, according to US News, the best civil engineering program in the country.

By Angelstar182 (Angelstar182) on Sunday, June 06, 2004 - 12:53 pm: Edit

isn't william hung like 31 yrs. old? what's he still doing in school anyways?

By Foreignboy (Foreignboy) on Sunday, June 06, 2004 - 12:58 pm: Edit

Nah, Hung is the normal age for college people. Anyway, the milk and cereal guys aren't really bad. They're just really weird.

By Angelstar182 (Angelstar182) on Sunday, June 06, 2004 - 01:15 pm: Edit

haha the milk and cereal boys are hilarious and i don't think they were trying to say they're good singers..they were just really, really bored =)

the milk and cereal guys weren't actually singing. The original song is done by "G Love and Special Sauce". And william hung is actually 21 i think. haha. you have to be under 25 to even try out for american idol i believe.

Anyway, when I hear berkeley, I think of "good public law school"
