do colleges look at and put much weight on state regents tests, such as New York's math A and math B tests?

By Jess13 (Jess13) on Sunday, May 30, 2004 - 01:14 pm: Edit

well I always thought not, but my guidance counselor told me that when they're comparing two NY applicants who are very similar, they'll look at Regents scores. But I don't think they'd have much weight, in this situation or otherwise.

nop

but they do have their own section on transcript and it gets own avarage.

still not to important

depends on the college. i'm sure SUNYs look at them a lot, whereas out-of-state schools might not.

certainly the most selective schools don't pay much attention to regents exams...unless your scores are poor...cuz that stands out...

Many states don't have standardized tests, but if you're from a state that has them, I think it hurts you to do poorly on them and may or may not help you to do well on them.

I think colleges use the state tests to evaluate the high school's standards. If you have poor regents grades and high class grades, the college will think something's fishy.

When we were in NY, I requested that the regents scores be removed from the college transcript and all of my kids' schools complied with the request. In fact, S's school does not put it on any college transcript. Even the State schools are not interested in the numbers so why include them? If they are there, they will take a peek at them and if there are issues, they will wonder why there is a discrepancy. You certainly get no brownie points for them outside of a few scholarships that you can vie for, but the test scores do not have to be on your transcript even if you are going for those awards.

My Regents' scores were on my transcript, I don't think it made that much of a difference either way. I think AP's are probably much more important. I received a 79 on the Bio Regents (due to the fact I was absent more than 30 times every semester), then I received a 5 on the AP Bio exam. I have a 90 on the Chemistry Regents, but without an equivalently high or higher score on the AP, who cares?

By Jess13 (Jess13) on Sunday, May 30, 2004 - 08:06 pm: Edit

there is no way to compare APs and regents. They are completely different levels, and at my school, you have to take the honors level (which is above regents level) take the regents exam as a final, and then perhaps go onto the AP class. And most of the people who take the regents never take an AP in that subject (at least in the sciences).

The only AP score I have so far is for Euro, and I did very well on both the AP and the regents....there is no correlation, however, as they are two completely different tests with completely different goals.

what school did u go to?

at least what part of town!?

how can they just remove those scores from ur transcript? thats not fair, i cant do that here

By Candi1657 (Candi1657) on Sunday, May 30, 2004 - 09:54 pm: Edit

My point is, Regents' exams in a subject will not be assumed to correlate with high performance as much as an AP or SAT II to an admissions office. Therefore, the OP need not worry about them.

By Kyle8744 (Kyle8744) on Monday, May 31, 2004 - 02:01 pm: Edit

well, i DO still need to worry about them because in most subjects the regents test counts as our final exam grade for our final average in the course.

By Synapse (Synapse) on Monday, May 31, 2004 - 03:42 pm: Edit

I wouldnt worry at all. I got into Suny Binghamton and I got a 69 on the Sequential 3 regents and a 72 on the chemistry regents LOL I did good in the classes but poorly on the tests.

If you have other good scores to offset your bad ones they wont care. As I got a 98 on the English Regents and a 92 on the Physics regents.

"well, i DO still need to worry about them because in most subjects the regents test counts as our final exam grade for our final average in the course."

LOL...so they obviously count a lot in your grading system...so why are you asking???

By Kyle8744 (Kyle8744) on Tuesday, June 08, 2004 - 07:33 pm: Edit

the question was concerning those several regents tests which do not count as the final exam for the class.
