John F. Kennedy had a 1060 and was 65/110 in his class.

He attended Princeton and Harvard and was President of the United States.

By Crazyyykid (Crazyyykid) on Thursday, May 20, 2004 - 08:48 pm: Edit

Ivyleague14, how is it possible that you know JFK's ranking if Choate Rosemary Hall does not rank their students? Is that an approximation or something?

By Crazyyykid (Crazyyykid) on Thursday, May 20, 2004 - 08:49 pm: Edit

Also, JFK comes from a prominent political massachusetts family. Plus, he was a smart guy.

1400- Columbia (asian male)

By Haithman (Haithman) on Saturday, May 22, 2004 - 01:27 pm: Edit

I think with the exception of the 1060 noone is kidding. However, that could be true...

By Dsh (Dsh) on Saturday, May 22, 2004 - 02:44 pm: Edit

Being admitted with 1350-1400 isn't remarkable. Being admitted with less than 1300 on the SAT is quite unusual, and I'm curious about what the other factors in the applications were.

By Arc (Arc) on Saturday, May 22, 2004 - 03:06 pm: Edit

why is that not remarkable? i find it somewhat hard to believe that people can get in with those scores. a 1350 to 1400 range is good but not that great...and i don't understand how people are getting in with 1060's and 1210's, unless they're URMs or recruited athletes or legacies or something...

By Gianscolere (Gianscolere) on Saturday, May 22, 2004 - 05:55 pm: Edit

the asian male with a 1400 who got into columbia from my school won a national writing award of some sort, is a prominent player on the football team (though he is not a recruited athlete) and the co-head of asian society. maybe his interesting personality shone through his teacher recs and essays (he's a good writer as well). very down to earth, acts like himself, not college admissions-driven (he didn't prep for the SATs or any tests). he is exceptional in many many ways and truly deserves to be admitted. oh yea, his international status (as an applicant from S. Korea) could have helped or hindered his chances.

By Dsh (Dsh) on Saturday, May 22, 2004 - 07:03 pm: Edit

It's not remarkable because 1350 is generally within the range of scores of the middle 50 percent of accepted students.

1390 - Penn

By Insntynonchalan (Insntynonchalan) on Friday, May 28, 2004 - 03:19 pm: Edit

I have a buddy who got into Columbia with a 1350. It isn't a joke. While colleges look at SAT scores, it is more of a trust boost than anything. Like, if all their other stats are wonderful, it just puts them a bit over the top. But if all the other stats are outstanding, and this one stat seems to not match the others, colleges might understand people who aren't good at these tests, etc. It isn't impossible, you know.

By Irock1ce (Irock1ce) on Friday, May 28, 2004 - 10:53 pm: Edit

you guys do know that MOST of the people who apply to ivies... have less than a 1400. In fact, outta the some 20,000 applicants to Princeton this year, only about 7000-8000 had 1400+ SATIs. Dont worry so much about the SATs.

By Alexandros (Alexandros) on Friday, May 28, 2004 - 11:12 pm: Edit

1310-Columbia SEAS, but strong sat II's (I think)-800,800,740,670

By Piglette (Piglette) on Saturday, May 29, 2004 - 05:17 pm: Edit

Uh, yeah, Irock1ice -- But how many of those below-1400-SAT scorers' applications made it past one first, quick glance by the Princeton admissions office? In other words, the fact that there were high numbers of low-scoring applicants does NOT reasonably lead to the conclusion that such applicants need not "worry" about their stats.

By Saxfreq1128 (Saxfreq1128) on Sunday, May 30, 2004 - 09:21 pm: Edit

I've spoken to a princeton adcom rep. As far as "quick glances" go, the only range of scores that will immediately have the adcom shaking their heads is 1100 or less.

In the words of the Georgetown adcom rep at a Harvard/G-town/Penn/Duke presentation:

"SATs matter less than you think they do, but more than you want them to."

Someone with a 1600 whose app puts the adcom to sleep has more to worry about than someone with a 1300 and significant personal/extracurricular attriutes. Trust me.

By Saxfreq1128 (Saxfreq1128) on Sunday, May 30, 2004 - 09:25 pm: Edit

That should be attributes* sorry.

Oh, and one more thing.

The Harvard adcom rep that I talked to (he was a very, very funny guy) said that taking the SATs more than three times is probably not the best idea because someone who has that much time has too much time to lose--plus, he said, it's just scary.

Don't fret. If you were rejected with a 1300 it was most likely not just because of your SAT score.
