By Xraider5 (Xraider5) on Thursday, May 13, 2004 - 03:04 am: Edit
my appeal letter, it's about a page and a half single-spaced:
"Dear UC Davis Admissions Review Committee,
I am disappointed with your decision not to accept me as a student this fall. However, in spite of this decision, I respectfully ask you to reconsider. I feel that there are many important issues that were not fully explained in my original application. Even though I applied as an “Undeclared” major, I now have every intent to major in bioengineering. When I applied to Davis, I was unsure of my major. I knew that I wanted to go into a science-related field, but I was instructed that if I was not sure of what I wanted to do, I would be best off selecting “Undeclared Life Science.” I have since then made my choice. I truly believe that UC Davis is the school for me and that I will be successful in its bioengineering program. Please allow me to elaborate on my unique circumstances.
I would like to explain the circumstances that impaired me from successfully performing my full potential throughout my junior year. I was elected class president my junior year, placing me on the junior class council as well as the school’s executive council. Along with this came many responsibilities; responsibilities that I was ready to handle. Traditionally, the class council works together as a team along with an advisor to plan and coordinate events. In my experience, however, both my advisor as well as several of the council members did not take matters seriously; forcing me to devote more time and effort than originally needed. Having an advisor who was not effective in performing his duties, I was left without a guide and a mentor. It was not uncommon for him to be absent for meetings, as well as events put on by the junior class. As a result, I was left with little support to coordinate the details of multiple fundraisers and dances put on by my class, particularly prom that required the entire year to coordinate. This put an enormous amount of pressure on me, knowing that I would take the blame if my class did not fulfill its duties. Despite a rough beginning, I managed to successfully pull through with my responsibilities, learning valuable skills and lessons in the process. I learned how to be organized, how to lead a team, and the sad truth that one cannot always rely on others. Unfortunately, my success in student government did not follow me into the classroom. Having to shift my attention from my studies to my other responsibilities caused my grades to slip more than I would have liked to a 3.6 UC GPA. It also harmed my AP examinations, as planning our prom in May did not allow myself much time to devote to AP exams two weeks before. This year, on the other hand, my grades have turned 180 degrees. I am confident in succeeding in my examinations now that I have time to devote. To show you how capable I really am, enclosed is a copy of my transcript, showing my senior year UC GPA of a 4.5. I ask that you consider this in your reevaluation of my application.
Perhaps one of the reasons why I feel that UC Davis is the perfect school for me is because it is close enough for me to visit home often. I have an autistic brother named Steven, for whom I care deeply. I find it necessary to be able to visit him often because I am the only friend he really has. Additionally, there are often many assignments and projects in school which he is not capable of understanding on his own and I have typically been the person to walk him through his homework. My parents do not always understand what is required of him, since they were not brought up in the United States’ education system. As Steven has grown up, he has looked to me as a source of companionship and emotional support. In all honesty, I have come to depend on him as much as he depends on me. Going to a different university would seriously hinder my visits with my brother, due to the far distance and costly travel expenses. I courteously ask that you remember me and Steven’s situation as you reevaluate my application.
Learning about the branch of UC Davis known as the UC Davis M.I.N.D. (Mental Investigation of Neurodevelopmental Disorders) Institute has confirmed my belief that UC Davis is the perfect fit for me. I was extremely pleased when I learned that the M.I.N.D. Institute specialized in researching and treating autism. I understand that the institute is one of a kind in that it is the only existing establishment which takes a collaborative approach from parents, doctors, and researchers towards researching and treating autism. Having the subject of autism being so close to my heart, I was compelled to learn more about this exceptional program. The more I have researched about this institution, the more impressed I became. Being so unique, I truly believe that the UC Davis M.I.N.D. Institution will in the near future make breakthrough discoveries in the study of autism and pave the path for those with this disorder to receive the help they deserve. I knew I wanted to be a part of this organization immediately. I still have my heart set on going to UC Davis hoping to be given the opportunity to be involved with the M.I.N.D. Institute in some way or form; whether through exploring research opportunities or volunteering for public outreaches and relations programs and events. I feel that the UC Davis M.I.N.D. Institute will quite possibly become one of the foremost leaders in autism research, and I would jump at the chance to be involved in this wonderful organization.
Please know that UC Davis is the school on which I have my heart set. I respectfully ask that you reevaluate my application in light of the information shared with you. Please permit me the chance to prove myself at your distinguished university. I would be happy to submit any additional information or answer any question you might have. Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you."
I also sent along 6 very good recommendations from teachers.
Roh, did they not get back to you yet?
By Tlaktan (Tlaktan) on Thursday, May 13, 2004 - 03:05 am: Edit
What did THEY write back? I am interested that this appeal went through.
By Xraider5 (Xraider5) on Thursday, May 13, 2004 - 03:09 am: Edit
they didn't write back anything. i just logged in and it said congratulations on your acceptance...
By Roh (Roh) on Thursday, May 13, 2004 - 04:29 pm: Edit
^ 4.5 senior gpa, autistic brother, 6 recommendation letters.
no wonder you got in...congrats to you again. =D
By Roh (Roh) on Thursday, May 13, 2004 - 04:34 pm: Edit
damn...i checked the website and they say they cannot offer me admission. T_T
NOOOOOOO!!!!
should i sent another letter to them expressing my strong desire to attend uc davis?
seems hopeless. =(
By Eyesclozedtight (Eyesclozedtight) on Thursday, May 13, 2004 - 05:01 pm: Edit
davis is your destiny, roh. my friend at davis right now said the girl down the hall from her didn't get in on her appeal the first time, appealed again, and got in. so there is hope. plus a friend of mine sent an appeal but decided she didn't want to go there after all. maybe you can have her spot.
By Roh (Roh) on Thursday, May 13, 2004 - 05:08 pm: Edit
^ maybe i still have a chance.
i definitely should write another letter to davis.
i think i'm just going to express my strong desires on going to uc davis. i'm going to make it more personal this time.
my last appeal was pretty much based on facts, maybe that was not enough.
By Xraider5 (Xraider5) on Thursday, May 13, 2004 - 06:18 pm: Edit
anyways i got an email from uc davis:

By Cali_Guy (Cali_Guy) on Thursday, May 13, 2004 - 08:41 pm: Edit
Hey Roh if you get in to UC Davis make sure you send me an email. i will be attending there this fall. i would like to meet you. all your posting on this board has made you famous ^^
By Roh (Roh) on Thursday, May 13, 2004 - 10:58 pm: Edit
anyone have ideas what i should write for my second "appeal"?
i'll most likely get it done this weekend.
i should ask them to give me a spot if someone else have given up their spot through the appeal procedure. after all, they're trying to fill as much students as possible depending on the spaces available. there's always some applicants who appealed and decided at last to not attend.
argh...can't they just accept one more person (me) to uc davis? maybe i can be like the last person to get accepted to uc davis with a second "appeal."
By Artic (Artic) on Thursday, May 13, 2004 - 11:02 pm: Edit
So roh did that mean your first appeal failed? Mine did for sb... I am sad, but not as much as I thought. See yah in Santa Cruz if you wind up there with me.
By Roh (Roh) on Friday, May 14, 2004 - 12:47 am: Edit
^ write a second appeal! lolz.
oh well, most likely going to end up in UCSC. maybe i'll see you there.
need to get myself a UCSC sweatshirt! =D
but there's really nothing to show off though. =(
don't worry, you can still transfer to UCSB after one or two years. that's what i'm doing.
By Artic (Artic) on Friday, May 14, 2004 - 02:06 am: Edit
Sry to take over your post whoever started this :/
I don't think it is possible to transfer after a year. How can you if you need to apply by winter. That means you only have one quarter of grades. I think if I can do weel enough I will work on transfering to UCLA in two years, but that is only if I work hard and pull a 4.0
By Roh (Roh) on Friday, May 14, 2004 - 02:11 am: Edit
^ use your summer school gpa.
i doubt it would work for me, but i'm going to try.
how do you think other people have successfully transferred within the UC system? my guess is they probably took courses over the summer and get like a 4.0
as you can see here, UCLA does accept sophomore transfer students:
http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergradapp/enrollops.html#la
By Roh (Roh) on Friday, May 14, 2004 - 02:21 am: Edit
this is kind of off topic, but can someone tell me why some people apply for the winter or spring terms and not the fall term?
what exactly are the differences?
is it easier to get into a UC if you apply for the winter or spring terms? (i think less people apply for those terms)
maybe i can ask uc davis if they can offer me the winter term instead of the fall term.
or is it not possible?
By Botheredone (Botheredone) on Friday, May 14, 2004 - 04:39 pm: Edit
I wouldn't ask them in your appeal. You're pretty much telling them you're not as qualified as other applicants and would like for them to be nice to you.
By Eyesclozedtight (Eyesclozedtight) on Friday, May 14, 2004 - 05:31 pm: Edit
i think you should tell them that you're willing to attend for winter or spring, but you would really like admission. i'm not sure where i would start for an appeal letter. maybe talk about CC? haha that'd make for an interesting letter.
By Roh (Roh) on Friday, May 14, 2004 - 05:57 pm: Edit
spring is pretty late.
i think i want to start at least in winter.
do UCD accept students for the winter term? i only heard that berkeley offer people for winter term if they didn't get into fall term. i never really heard UCD accepting applicants for the winter term.
By Artic (Artic) on Friday, May 14, 2004 - 10:53 pm: Edit
I would love a winter start, that would give me an extra 4 months to stash some cash b4 i have to leave
By Xraider5 (Xraider5) on Friday, May 14, 2004 - 10:54 pm: Edit
was anyone else's davis appeal granted?
im anxious to find out the appeal statistics
By Ohfohsho (Ohfohsho) on Saturday, May 15, 2004 - 01:48 am: Edit
hi! I also got in with the appeal to davis.
By Roh (Roh) on Saturday, May 15, 2004 - 03:18 am: Edit
^ congrats...can you post your appeal letter up.
i'm curious as to what you wrote.
need some ideas for my second appeal as well.
too sad that i'm not part of all this. =(
By Roh (Roh) on Saturday, May 15, 2004 - 03:20 am: Edit
Artic,
starting in winter is actually not that bad. gives you more time to waste for the summer!
By Eyesclozedtight (Eyesclozedtight) on Saturday, May 15, 2004 - 12:25 pm: Edit
i have two friends whose appeals both went through. one flat out rejected it, but the other is having a hard time deciding what he wants to do. i really want him to go to davis because he's been one of my best friends for like 8 years. i just thought it would ease the college tension to have a best friend there with me. but it's all his choice, and not an easy one at that. i guess i'll see what he decides doing.
By Roh (Roh) on Saturday, May 15, 2004 - 02:55 pm: Edit
^ maybe i can replace that spot for him. =D
By Mayermatthews (Mayermatthews) on Saturday, May 15, 2004 - 03:39 pm: Edit
Roh, you should seriously send Davis all of your CC posts... I don't think any of us are as passionate about UCD as you are ;) good luck w/ the second appeal!
By Eyesclozedtight (Eyesclozedtight) on Sunday, May 16, 2004 - 09:42 pm: Edit
o man you should!!! if there was only a way you could tell the admissions counselors about CC. what if we all signed a petition to UCD saying we want Roh to get in? that'd be so awesome!
By Derbisblue (Derbisblue) on Sunday, May 16, 2004 - 10:50 pm: Edit
ya! We'd make the news! lol.. it'd be awesome. We should send UCD admission a email with all our names on it, and some of ROh's posts. haha
By Roh (Roh) on Monday, May 17, 2004 - 01:48 am: Edit
wah...thank you for all of your guys support.
i finally finished my second appeal.
sending it tomorrow! woohoo!
i think i got rejected because my appeal was too short. this time it's about a page and a half. =)
By Xraider5 (Xraider5) on Monday, May 17, 2004 - 09:02 am: Edit
hey roh, from what i've seen the people who won their appeal to davis basically stated that davis has something they can't get anywhere else, such as a certain organization or something...maybe you should look into that?
By Roh (Roh) on Monday, May 17, 2004 - 12:57 pm: Edit
^ yeah, i didn't elaborate much on that.
what UCD organizations should i say i'm passionate about? i just said that i can transfer my volunteer experiences in the past to help benefit organizations at UC Davis. and stuff like that. i didn't say which organizations though. should i just research something about the organizations?
oh yeah, i decided not to send my appeal today.
probably tomorrow.
By Roh (Roh) on Monday, May 17, 2004 - 11:59 pm: Edit
^ never mind, i don't really need to say that much about the organizations and stuff.
for some reason, i'm confident that my second appeal has more chance of succeeding than my previous appeal. =D
By Imustbebored (Imustbebored) on Tuesday, May 18, 2004 - 01:35 am: Edit
I think UCs did grant a fair number of appeals, at least at my school. I got into UCD on appeal. I know probably about 4 or more and some to SB. I barely had to work on my appeal. I just wrote one draft which did in fact have some strong, true evidence leading to what i want to study, and I had someone look it over once and sent it in and one rec letter that support my claims...
oh, man, that appeal letter thats posted is way too long. I made it one page and one letter of rec.
By Roh (Roh) on Tuesday, May 18, 2004 - 01:37 am: Edit
what? another person getting accepted to UCD with an appeal?
this is absolutely outrageous. O_O
By Imustbebored (Imustbebored) on Tuesday, May 18, 2004 - 02:23 am: Edit
it wasn't that outrageous. there were some really hard working, deserving students who got the boot. I'm sure that guy up there didn't get in because he had an autistic brother and 6 letters. He had the credentials and drive.
Anyways, youre the guy trying to appeal an appeal right?. Um, hm... I don't know. Good luck. But you should start looking into and signing up for classes at community college or whatever. Just be sure you're happy with your backup. Every school, classes, dorms, appts, and even cheaper books are going fast though.
By Roh (Roh) on Tuesday, May 18, 2004 - 03:58 am: Edit
^ well, i'm just adding more new and compelling information to my appeal.
i said that there were some important issues that were not FULLY explained in my original appeal...hehe. =P
By Ohfohsho (Ohfohsho) on Tuesday, May 18, 2004 - 07:04 pm: Edit
at my school, there are a whole bunch of people thaht just got in yesterday.. even though some came out on friday.. so peepo.. check it again if its still pending..
By Roh (Roh) on Tuesday, May 18, 2004 - 08:50 pm: Edit
^ gosh...how many appeals are UCD granting this year? O_O
By Fartsandburps (Fartsandburps) on Tuesday, May 18, 2004 - 10:54 pm: Edit
Davis aint the best school....and to tell people that you needed to appeal to get in is pretty sad.
O'Doyle RULES!!
By Derbisblue (Derbisblue) on Tuesday, May 18, 2004 - 11:31 pm: Edit
Davis isn't the best school but IT IS a very good school. And many qualified students didn't get in this year due to UC budget cut, there's nothing sad about it. However it's pretty sad that you have that attitude.
By Ownownage (Ownownage) on Tuesday, May 18, 2004 - 11:41 pm: Edit
what the is O'Doyle ...never heard that before...Davis is better any day.
By Crazayshiat (Crazayshiat) on Tuesday, May 18, 2004 - 11:56 pm: Edit

i guess i'm the ONLY ONE here that didn't have my appeal granted.
By Artic (Artic) on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 12:21 am: Edit
me neither. Ownage call ucsb and tell em to let me take your spot ;P
By Ownownage (Ownownage) on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 12:48 am: Edit
aite fo sho artic!
Roh have hope!...your second appeal will work!
By Roh (Roh) on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 01:16 am: Edit
^ you know what? i'm confident that my second appeal will have more chance of working than my previous appeal.
i think it's because my first appeal is too short, and the reason is not significant enough.
this time, i have better reasons and much more significant information.
Artic, i was only talking about UCD appeals. i'm the only one that didn't get in with an appeal so far.
By Sanfranstudent (Sanfranstudent) on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 03:37 pm: Edit
EVERYONE at my school who appealed to Davis got in, they werent even impressive. one girl had like a UC GPA of a 3.5, and an ACT sore of 25.
By Roh (Roh) on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 04:19 pm: Edit
Mine HAS to work this time.
By Ohfohsho (Ohfohsho) on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 06:10 pm: Edit
what school do you go to sanfranstudent?
By Roh (Roh) on Tuesday, May 25, 2004 - 04:51 pm: Edit
my second appeal failed. =(
By Roh (Roh) on Tuesday, May 25, 2004 - 04:54 pm: Edit
can you guys post your stats?
my second appeal is actually pretty convincing.
is it because my gpa is only 3.6 and my sat score is not high enough?
can i ask them why i was rejected?
By Eyesclozedtight (Eyesclozedtight) on Tuesday, May 25, 2004 - 05:00 pm: Edit
third appeal time, roh. maybe it's like a test or something. the admissions counselors are just seeing how bad you want it. you know you want it worse than anyone else, so i'd so go for it.
By Roh (Roh) on Tuesday, May 25, 2004 - 05:06 pm: Edit
i don't know.
would they hate me more if i do that?
if i am really going to appeal again, this will be my last try.
By Roh (Roh) on Tuesday, May 25, 2004 - 05:10 pm: Edit
are there any good writers in here?
maybe you guys can help me write a very convincing letter that can make them cry into tears. T_T
By Xraider5 (Xraider5) on Tuesday, May 25, 2004 - 05:38 pm: Edit
how did they let you know that your second appeal failed?
By Alpinesun (Alpinesun) on Tuesday, May 25, 2004 - 07:20 pm: Edit
try to sound mature in your letter..
By Ownownage (Ownownage) on Tuesday, May 25, 2004 - 08:18 pm: Edit
hey Roh, do you mind if you post your first two appeal letters? We can correct your stuff from there and tell you what to add.
By Ownownage (Ownownage) on Tuesday, May 25, 2004 - 08:20 pm: Edit
To those who's appeal is granted:
Hey are you guys done with your SLR forms and picture ID. Cause on my admissions thing it said the forms were due may 1st or something. And btw which dorms are the best and how are UCD suites like?
One last question. Anyone going to summer advising for college of engineering?
By Roh (Roh) on Tuesday, May 25, 2004 - 08:39 pm: Edit
Xraider5: i checked online
Alpinesun: i am being mature though
Ownownage: i doubt that would help. i think i'll just type up a paragraph stating how BADLY i want to attend uc davis, and briefly state again the reasons why it's critical for me to attend uc davis.
i'll even say that i'm not content about where i plan to go for college, and i'll choose to transfer to uc davis anyways after one or two years.
By Ownownage (Ownownage) on Wednesday, May 26, 2004 - 01:59 am: Edit
One more question for UCD appeals. Do we get guarenteed housing? cause when i clicked on the housing link it says i can't do my housing yet. Any of you have the same problem>?
By Roh (Roh) on Wednesday, May 26, 2004 - 02:02 am: Edit
WHAT ARE YOUR STATS?
this question goes to all of the people who got in.
By Derbisblue (Derbisblue) on Wednesday, May 26, 2004 - 03:05 am: Edit
Roh, 3.6 isn't low at all, I know plenty of people here at Davis with high school GPA lower than that... but then it was 2 years ago.. I'm really sorry that your 2nd appeal failed. Good Luck on your 3rd one.
By Tsdad (Tsdad) on Wednesday, May 26, 2004 - 07:38 am: Edit
Roh:
Sorry that you didn't get into UCD, but you're in at UCSC. Consider the advice in Stephen Sills' song:
And if you can't be with the one you love, honey
Love the one you're with

Hey, all. I'm working on a piece for Seventeen Magazine about female students (hey, it's Seventeen) who have successfully appealed their college rejections. Anyone here succeeded? Or know of any young women who have? email me at zoecourtman@Yahoo.com, or reply to thread.
Thank you!

Oops, guess I wasn't supposed to post my contact info. Sorry, moderators! anyway, go to my profile and email me from there if anyone is interested in contributing their appeals stories to a Seventeen Magazine article.

I think denied appeals approached the situation in the wrong way. You want to convince them that you have potential to succeed and can contribute to the diversity of the campus. Making them cry wont help. Making them feel sympathy wouldn't help. I talked to an admissions officer for Berkeley prior to UC app deadline. They say too many people do that and they deny them, regardless of 4.0+ or 1300+. Well, my writing ability is pretty sour and I didn't get in to the UCs I wanted, which were the ones that had my desired major. But I appeal and got in. I didn't make it sound sad, I just told them to take a second look at my app with new stuff I have done this year while the app was processed. UC decisions are final after appeals. They probably had several people go through the app. There's no reason to convince them again. Sorry, guy. I'm just saying exactly what the outreach person advised me to do.
Here's my resume:
GPA after junior year: 4.32
SAT: 520V/610M
II: 490writ/620 mathIIC/610chem
APs: passed 3 of 4...took 3 this year
5 years with Red Cross is my most notable outside work. Doing that was the most meaningful.
I spend a lot of time running, working out, reading nutrition(my major)/fitness magazines ...but I dont think I mentioned that ever.
Well, for those denied, I wish you well. Remember, you got to have the drive and something meaningful. I think they would like to see that. Like my friend wrote about bodybuilding in his personal statement, cuz he is a huge beast, but he loves it. He got into all UCs except LA and Berk. Remember there's nothing wrong with being a transfer! But classes for the fall 2004 are almost full! I know summer is.
