Actually Jody Foster was pretty smart (valedictorian, fluent in french, etc. etc.) but ummm yeah whatever i hope i didn't just sound like hinkleysdfa

are you kidding?
By meeee on Saturday, February 22, 2003 - 10:46 pm: Edit
i guess i just dont understand how a full time olympic athlete, who doesnt do anything but SKATE, would have time to get grades on par with what harvard wants...
By j on Saturday, February 22, 2003 - 11:24 pm: Edit
I think Sarah Hughes is going to defer school for a year or two.
By Morgantruce (Morgantruce) on Sunday, February 23, 2003 - 08:49 am: Edit
Jody Foster was getting paid millions of dollars per movie when she decided to devote several years to getting her degree... and she was working in a field where youth is everything.
Yale was certainly impressed my that kind of thinking.
You might say that her college education cost her many millions of dollars... but, in the long run, she will come out way ahead. A fine mind shows as well on screen as it does in life--it is the ultimate attraction on every stage.
By Thedad (Thedad) on Sunday, February 23, 2003 - 09:59 am: Edit
Not to mention off stage.

Where did you hear that Sarah Hughes got a 1550? I don't believe that...
By x on Sunday, February 23, 2003 - 02:48 pm: Edit
I heard 1500. I know she got into Harvard EA, but I think she's still waiting for a reply from columbia before making the final decision.
By o on Sunday, February 23, 2003 - 04:41 pm: Edit
Like most she'll probably choose Harvard over any though.
By SH on Sunday, February 23, 2003 - 06:40 pm: Edit
how do you guys know what colleges she applied to and which one she is picking?? are you guys personal friends with her or something?
By x on Sunday, February 23, 2003 - 07:34 pm: Edit
haha... no. When you watch figure skating competitions on tv, the announcers usually say a little something about each competitior before they skate. They usually also have some little profile thing.
During nationals, the announcer mentioned haravrd and columbia.

sarah hughes is an example of someone born into an athletic AND intelligent family.
she trains hard and has the genetics for it...her father was a college and semi-pro athlete (hockey). she was brought up with athletics all her life...so does it surprise you that she's a good athlete?
on the intellectual side, BOTH her parents went to cornell. it may not be just the genetics...but growing up in a family of two ivy league parents ingratiates you with good influences including arts, culture, literature, etc.
sarah hughes did indeed score a 1550 on the SATs and will attend harvard. i saw the news report on the local television network (WCBZ) here in cambridge.
By realistic on Sunday, February 23, 2003 - 08:44 pm: Edit
growing up in a rich family and attending one of the best public high schools in the country located in one of the wealthiest areas doen't hurt either. We should all have such opportunities in life!
By tt on Sunday, February 23, 2003 - 11:14 pm: Edit
I read she will likely not attend Harvard because her coach lives in New York and will not move. Therefore, she wants to attend Columbia where her sister also goes to law school. All this came from Sports Illustrated. Also, I heard she scored in the low 1400s, and she never told anyone what her score was. It is confidential, anyway.
By bored on Sunday, February 23, 2003 - 11:37 pm: Edit
Why are people so obsessed with where sarah hughes is going to college? No criticism of any of those posting here... but I've seen a lot of postings on this topic - and the attention it's getting seems more like something that you'd see for an actress or pop star.
Another celeb - Brooke Sheilds went to Princeton. Also already very famous.
By asdf on Monday, February 24, 2003 - 12:58 am: Edit
i think there is a difference. actresses and pop stars get in on fame alone.
but people look at sarah hughes and want to find fault with her. they think that just because she's an athlete, she cant be smart. and when they find out that she has great grades and test scores...they are baffled and try to find some chink in her armor to justify their jealousy.
the truth is, sarah hughes is probably a great candidate...gold medal or no gold medal.

chelsea clinton was smart that's why she got into all the schools. She's on a rhodes Scholarship at Oxford right now, you don't get that by being famous.
By Creatorcat (Creatorcat) on Sunday, March 02, 2003 - 04:00 am: Edit
Chelsea Clinton, as reported by "The Guardian", 'has been offered a job at London's "McKinsey management consultants" starting on 40,000 pounds per year (around $65,000). Offered... well, better say head-hunted for the position.'
'McKinsey clients include 100 of the world's top companies and those who work there are an elite club.
What does that gawky brat have that others don't? How could a 22-year-old girl with no business experience whatsoever justify such a lavish per annum wedge?
Would her history BA from Stanford and masters degree in international relations from Oxford, (and AGAIN-NO EXPERIENCE) really help one of prestigeous McKinsley clients in their business and management?'
I'm sure there were a LOT more people qualified way better than Chelsea for such a position.
I'd say- you DO need brains, obviously, but being a celebrity's daughter, son or being famous yourself does present one with something that others simply don't have and sometimes DOES imply certain advantage when it comes to schooling and, as we see, finding a job.
By Morgantruce (Morgantruce) on Sunday, March 02, 2003 - 09:14 am: Edit
Even brains are not required when the people responsible for filling the vacancy are willing to settle for celebrity alone.
Hint: (roll of drums...) "Hail To The Chief"
By Thedad (Thedad) on Sunday, March 02, 2003 - 12:43 pm: Edit
From what I've heard, CC is a pretty sharp cookie and--regadless of political views--has two very bright parents, so it's not surprising. That said, having a celebrity on board often greases the skids for more business and is often worth it.
Personal case in point. I'm involved in the early stages of putting together a local business group that would give support (read: $$$) to the arts programs in the local school district. An appeal over my signature or that of my peers would be yawnable; an appeal over Mel Gibson's signature--he's been recruited for the effort--gets some attention.

If you were an admissions officer, wouldn't you accept natalie portman or sarah hughes? think about the publicity. Although I must say...if I could afford to hire anyone I wanted to help prepare me for the SAT's, I would probably have scored 1550 as well.
By Hildegard (Hildegard) on Thursday, March 20, 2003 - 11:55 pm: Edit
Well, I don't think admissions officers really admit people based on fame.
Claire Danes was rejected by Harvard, I think right after she did Romeo & Juliet and was rated and awarded something (grammy, oscar? not sure) for best actress. I saw the awards myself and remember her being chosen over some other really good actresses, which as far as I know, Natalie Portman hasn't.
However, Natalie Portman is a straight-A student, speaks Japanese, Hebrew and French, is member of some honor societies, and is very devoted to school. She said "I'd rather be smart than a star."
Whereas Claire Danes claimed that she didn't like school that much, but Jodie Foster convinced her of attending Yale (or so I heard.)
So, with those two mentalities, I'm sure that the admissions officers can pick the candidate, whether celebrity or not. I doubt that Claire Danes had the same intellectual talents or interests that Natalie Portman has, and hence, her rejection from Harvard.

Natatlie Portman is my dream woman...smart, sexy, and with nice cleavage.
By Chen (Chen) on Friday, March 21, 2003 - 04:46 am: Edit
Aw, Natalie Portman warms my heart too minus the cleavage.
Sarah Hughes did KAPLAN, everyone. She was in Teen People, I think, and there was she and her Kaplan book. Something gave me the impression that she studied it thoroughly.
What about Michelle Kwan? She goes to...UCLA? And didn't she transfer to some other school like Stanford and then transfer back?
By Kalitiha (Kalitiha) on Friday, March 21, 2003 - 04:56 am: Edit

I think Matt Damon went to Harvard...
And for some reason a big chunk of actors on Broadway attended Northwestern University, which as close to an Ivy as Illinois can get...

Matt Damon so went to Harvard. So, he's smart as well as a hottie.

Matt Damon cleaned MIT's floors in "Good Will Hunting," however, he did go to Harvard in real life. He attended for 6 semesters, majoring in English, but dropped out 2 semesters before completing his degree. And we all know what happened next.

Sure...if that's how it is in your world. It could be reality, but you might ask what was going on with Winona Ryder and Ben Affleck's personal assistant. Speaking of Ben Affleck, in your world, can kill Jennifer Lopez and clear the way for me?

Oh, right, Jennifer. You see, Matt and I already tried to talk Ben out of that one, but I guess he's got to learn for himself. Murdering her is always an option.
