i was wondering exactly how big of an impact the minority status has on your application. i know it differs between schools, but generally speaking. I am Mexican, my father only completed grammar scool, and my mother only completed high school. what impact might that have?
thanks!

Many colleges and universities are actively seeking students with your background. When you fill out applications, make sure you state it clearly--including the details about your parents' schooling as well.
Whether they admit it or not, colleges with a low percentage of Mexican students are eager to increase those numbers and will allow some leeway when it comes to grades, test scores, etc. They will NOT, however, admit students whose credentials are so far below their normal "admit ranges" that these students are likely to fail.
When exploring colleges, see how your grades and scores fit with their published "averages." If you're on the low end (but not way off the chart), you have a good shot.
Another question: you say you are Mexican, but you don't indicate if you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. If not, then you will be evaluated as an international student and (unless you don't need financial aid) those standards are
extremely tough. If, however, you ARE a U.S. citizen (or you hold a Green Card) then indeed your minority status will be a plus in the admission process.

hello,
this website is really scary for me because i didn't really realize there were sooo many smart people in the world. I go to an all girls boarding school in VA. With only 125 people in the whole student body. (about 35 in my class.) my GPA isn't a 4.0 its more like a 3.5 and my SATs are like a 1350.I will have taken 1 honors course, and 2 APs when i finish HS. I was born in Africa (obviously making me black)and can speak 3.5 languages fluently.I am also an artist, and plan to send in a portfolio. I also play the piano and the violin. Will this help me at all? considering all the 4.0s and 1600s out there? Both my sisters go to ivys and i would like to apply to one as well. I also heard that some colleges look at a B- in private schools like an A in public school. Is that true? thanks for your help.
