We've finished our spring and summer tours. Son has decided to apply to 6 maybe 7 schools. We've made ourselves a chart to follow our progress. Most of the schools say that by July 1st they will have the applications for fall 2003 admissions and they keep telling us at the info sessions to apply early. How early is early? If a schools has rolling admissions is it approriate to go ahead and apply in Sept? What exactly is the best time frame to follow? He obviously dosen't want to be the first to apply, but he wants to get this application process out of the way this summer, so he can concentrate on scholarship essays during the rest of the school year. Is this unusual?

Yes, it's unusual, but highly commendable.
But check the response requirements of the schools with rolling admissions -- you don't want to be stuck with an early response date requirement if he's admitted relatively early in the process. I have seen kids caught in a difficult situation when their second-choice (rolling admissions) school required a big deposit on a date before the kids got their replies from their first-choice schools.

Has anyone read a recent article from U.S. News and World Report from the 2002 College Rankings Edition. The article was about a junior from Indiana who applied and was accepted to Indiana University in the spring of his junior year. Does anyone have an opinion about this?
