affirmative action

By Tenniscraze (Tenniscraze) on Saturday, April 03, 2004 - 02:22 am: Edit

how does the 'affirmative action' work with the colleges?

Colleges try to incorporate people from different ethnic groups into their college based on the representation of those ethnic groups in America. Basically, ethnic groups that are underrepresented (eg black, hispanic, native american, etc) in academia are favored more so than ethnic groups that are well represented (white, asian). This has lead to skeptics calling this practice "reverse racism", etc.

There has been many supreme court cases surrounding the legality of affirmative action (Bakke vs. Reagents of the University of California, etc).

Personally, I have no problem with it.

so do you have to indicate to the colleges of this 'affirmative action' if you are a minority or will they already know?

To be entitled to race based preferences, you just have to check off your race in the indicated box in the application.
The prefered races are black/hispanic/american indian
The shunned races are:
white/asian(oriental)/asian(Indian)
