By Icansmile4u (Icansmile4u) on Friday, April 02, 2004 - 09:37 am: Edit

I just got admitted to Stanford and Upenn's Huntsman program (college + wharton) Even other than myself, a huge portion of Huntsman admits seemed to have got into at least one of HYPS. The thing is HYPS's name value is way too great to be turned down right away and Huntsman program itself seems quite rigorous and attractive as well. So anyone on this board can suggest any professional insights into the Huntsman program in side by side comparison to HYPS? Some kind of numerical statics date or even some news analysis articles will be very appreciated as well. I just want to know if Huntsman is as good as Upenn claims it to be.

hyps for sure

Just look where the grads end up. They either go on to be doctors or millionaires. I got into Yale ED but rejected by Penn M&T. If I had to choose between the two I'd choose Penn simply because I think I'd learn more and be better off later in life. Plus, two degrees would be nice.

I would think hyps would better serve you. Undergrad degrees from HYPS are more respected than an undergrad degree from penn, even if it is huntsman. You can get a buisness degree at any prestigious biz school after you attend hyps if you want. HYPS is just to hard to turn down.

SHYP for sure!

I think you can't beat Wharton. But Stanford is great too.

Wharton ownz HYPS (I want to get an MBA..)
But HYPS own Penn.

I think you people missed the point.

All four are great in their own right. It really should come down to personal preference rather than name recognition.

By Deferreddude (Deferreddude) on Friday, April 02, 2004 - 07:46 pm: Edit

Quite frankly, Wharton does not pass the "dumbass" test. Ask anybody, including the dumbest people on the street, if they know either Harvard or Stanford and they will say "of course!" If you ask any ordinary joe what wharton, Caltech, or even MIT is and they will give you a blank stare. So the name recognition of HYPS is definitely much better than wharton.

By Masterchris (Masterchris) on Friday, April 02, 2004 - 08:31 pm: Edit

Even though hyps has a ton of name recognition, name recognition shouldnt steer your decision alone. All are good schools.
Haithman, for an mba, why does wharton own hyps. Harvard and Stanford are just as highly ranked by us news and world report for biz schools.

That must be a hard decision to make. Well, I think Huntsman program is far better than plain major in Stanford. However, scholarship agencies in Korea might appreciate Stanford (science/engineering) more than Upenn Huntsman program.

ps. Good to see you on this board (I'm Boram's freind).

Defferreddude: the thing is nobody cares if the dumbass doesn't know about Wharton. Great people of the job market, on the other hand, I'm sure, know of Wharton and its magnificence.

If you're looking at impressing, it's about impressing the right people, wouldn't you agree?

In the end, if you go on to get a master's degree in something, I'm sure you've heard the phrase: "it's the last degree that counts." Make that one matter.

For now, It's my personal opinion that Stanford won't do anything for you that Wharton can't, and vice versa. They're both excellent schools

First, congrats on HYPS + Huntsman.

If I were you, I would jump at Huntsman. Wharton's name is very, very well known: people leave there making near or above six-figures, and if good at, say, i-banking, are raking in lots of money in a few years. That's just Wharton.

Huntsman is quite the step up. Not only do you get special attention (I think there’s even a special dorm), you'll literally be with some of the best and brightest business students in the nation. That's true of HYPS too, but for business, Huntsman is where it's at.

From my school two years ago, a girl was basically faced with the same dilemma, and she leaped at Huntsman. She knew that in 5 years or so after leaving Penn, she'd be a millionaire. After being there awhile, she loves Philly. I think she manages some undergraduate Wharton Chinese forum now, where she seeks to get businesspeople from places like Hong Kong to speak to the undergraduates. The name is good enough for her to attract their attention.

From what I’ve heard, business recruiters--people who are paid to know where real talent lies--go after Wharton (and Huntsman) pretty badly.

Of course, if you want a more balanced education, don't want to work for two degrees, or don't like Penn/Philly, don't go there. But personally, I envy you. A LOT.

Just my $0.02 Good luck, wherever you end up.

Ps: Try emailing some Huntsman students for a more specific perspective.

just to give you an example of job market recruiting: My friend and I were looking for internships and we called a few i-banks and said:

ME:
Hi, I was looking for an internship...do you guys offer any for hs students who will be college freshman?
UBS PaineWebber Recruiter:
sorry no we don't...
ME:
I'll be going to Wharton next fall...
UBS PaineWebber Recruiter:
Oh!! in that case fax me your c.v. as soon as possible and we will set you up with an interview.

In the end, I was offered the job the next day.

MY FRIEND: Hi, I was looking for an internship...do you guys offer any for hs students who will be college freshman?
UBS PaineWebber Recruiter:
sorry no we don't...
MY FRIEND:
I'll be going to Harvard next fall...
UBS PaineWebber Recruiter:
sorry we only accept interns who are college juniors or seniors. Try back in a few years.

He called before me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Moral of the story: among business people, i-banks, consulting firms, etc. Wharton is more highly regarded than HYPS...

This is a completely true story just in case anyone was questioning the legitimacy of the story. Oh, and I didn't even get into Huntsman just regular Wharton; I can't imagine the plethora of opportunities available to the lucky 50 Huntsman kids.

By Masterchris (Masterchris) on Saturday, April 03, 2004 - 03:02 am: Edit

well obviously they would choose someone who is currently in buisness school over someone who is not, as HYPS has no buisness major for undergrad. The question is what is best for him 10 yrs down the line.

By Masterchris (Masterchris) on Saturday, April 03, 2004 - 03:05 am: Edit

If you go to hyps, almost every door can be open for you, not just business. Also, the most successful business people got an undergraduate degree in something outside of business. Wharton is just more limited, and doesnt offer anything that much better as you do not even get an MBA by going.

By Bern700 (Bern700) on Saturday, April 03, 2004 - 03:06 am: Edit

dude both of us are hs seniors and have never studied business.

By Icansmile4u (Icansmile4u) on Saturday, April 03, 2004 - 03:58 am: Edit

"Also, the most successful business people got an undergraduate degree in (something outside of business)." I am not sure what this phrase meant exactly. HYPS(Stan, in my case) won't get me any specialized degree other than Arts & Science B.A one, which Huntsman kid obviously gets from Upenn college as well.(while it's not as prestigious as HYPS one)

By Masterchris (Masterchris) on Saturday, April 03, 2004 - 02:06 pm: Edit

I meant that ppl in biz usually get a ba/bs is something other than buisness during their undergrad years. This gives them a broader perspective and can be something they can apply their buisness degree to later.
What degrees do you get from going to huntsman anyway. I was under the impression that you do not get an mba.

By Icansmile4u (Icansmile4u) on Saturday, April 03, 2004 - 02:31 pm: Edit

It's B.A in International Studies from Upenn Arts & Science and B.S in Economics from Wharton school. I am not sure if other degree options are available from the Upenn college. Obviously, this isnt a program for someone with unclear idea of his/her major or who is planning to switch the major after taking a couple of freshman year classes. Simply, there isn't such option.
