I talked to a UCSD admissions officer today. He said they don't read any appeals there unless there is an administrative error (gpa was wrong, sat scores weren't recorded...). He was really upset about it and said they make absolutely no room for appeals there and he said it was a "bad idea". He said "you can't appeal" when I asked him about something I did wrong on my application, because it wasn't an administrative error. I'm just letting ppl know so they won't waste their time w/UCSD (I dont know about other UC's).

My advice to anyone who wants to appeal to UCSD:
Still appeal. I don't mean to insult Satin94 at all, but how credible do you really think this is? That admissions officer must have been on drugs when he said that. Good luck!

i know exactly. this is OUR future not theirs. who are they to tell us if we can't appeal or not.
satin, you should still appeal and write: "i don't care if it's not an administrative error. some error must have been made when reviewing my application for you all to not have accepted me" kind of thing

I am being 100% honest. I called today after school at 2:30pm. He was EXTREMELY rude. He was definetely not on drugs. He said UCSD has no appeals process and they have no space for appeals. Why would I lie? I'm just trying to save people time so they won't have to go through dissapointment and so people can appeal to places that actually might accept them.

I know someone who appealed there and got in - there was no technical error on her application. Also two years ago my sister appealed just basically saying, please let me in I really want to go here, and they obviously read it thoroughly because they mailed her back saying specifically why she couldn't be admitted. The guy you talked to is probably just lazy and is getting tired of so many people appealing - but it does sometimes work.

Lilskeetums - What did the person say in their appeal? (the one that you said got in)

http://www.ucop.edu/pathways/ucnotes/february04/campusq&a.html
FOR UCSD APPEAL:
Students must first discuss their concerns with an admissions officer. If the admissions officer determines that there was a clear administrative error and the corrected information will rank the student within the select range, the application will be forwarded to the assistant director or associate director of admissions for review.
If the student insists on taking his or her request further, they are asked to write a letter to the assistant vice chancellor, who will review the application and supporting documentation. In the case of transfer applicants, an admissions officer will evaluate the application following the receipt of a letter to the associate director. Then the associate director and assistant vice chancellor will review the request.
UCSD will only consider an appeal 1) if the student can show that there was an administrative error made in the evaluation of the application, such as failure to consider an approved criteria; or there was a computational error that would have resulted in an increase in the overall comprehensive review score; or 2) if the student can provide DOCUMENTED new or compelling information that SIGNIFICANTLY affects the comprehensive review of his/her application such as any extraordinary situation or event that was NOT presented in the original application.

i've talked to a guy at ucsd about appeals a few times and they will always tell u that it's for administrative purposes and errors only. but as the above statement reads that is not the case. come on, how could they seriously make such an error? and if so how would it ever change the GPA significantly so that 60+ people made the mistake. just go for it, they have to read whatever you have to say. plus my EAOP advisor said that they look for other reasons.

well, first I checked online and found out I was rejected from UCSD. but then I emailed them asking why I didn't get in, and some days ago they sent me email, saying there was technical error w/ that website, and I was actually admitted. I wonder if I didn't send that email they might have not realized that error.
but at any rate, emailing isn't a bad idea.
one of the reasons why he's so irritated might be that the acceptance rate is like 8% this year and there are much more ppl appealing than they had last year..

satin - I'm not sure actually, but I'm pretty sure she just listed all her ec's and awards... I actually didn't know her personally. sorry I can't help much more than that... there are a lot of other appeal threads floating around here though

Don't appeal?? You make it sound like you will get punished if you do appeal. If UCSD is your dream school, appeal, you never know what could happen. So go for it people, appeal ur butts off.

Polly
what exactly did u put in ur email?
i think errors like that are rare, maybe i'll try it and see what happens but i don't want them to send a list saying the following reasons are y u didn't get in...."b/c ur a loser"
By Roh (Roh) on Thursday, April 01, 2004 - 01:29 am: Edit
to the people who are appealing just for the hell of it: DON'T APPEAL.
you're decreasing other people's chances of getting in.
well, just to let you know. =D

I've got a question. My friend, who's got a 1100 SAT score with a 550 SAT II average and a 3.8 UC GPA, was rejected from UCSB and UCB. UCB wasn't a surprise, but UCSB was. After reviewing her application, I noticed that her grades were listed as "Quarter" even though our school uses Semester grades. Is this worth appealing for?
By Kewkiekid (Kewkiekid) on Saturday, April 03, 2004 - 01:26 am: Edit
no, test scores are way too low.
By Umawkward (Umawkward) on Saturday, April 03, 2004 - 01:55 am: Edit
i got into ucsd but for the winter quarter in 2005. my guidance counselor told me to write a letter of appeal to see if i can change my acceptance to fall 2004. however, im not sure what to say in this letter of appeal. do any of you have any suggestions?
By Mines (Mines) on Monday, April 05, 2004 - 05:57 am: Edit
Yeah, i had a 3.625 UC GPA and a 1280 on SAT and a 600 average on SAT IIs and i got rejected from UCSD, SB, LA, I, and USC. Im gonna put alot of effort into appealing, but i know the chances are slim. If i dont get in, itz not the end of the world, but its going to be hard going to community college for two years and transfering.
By Lamom (Lamom) on Monday, April 05, 2004 - 03:54 pm: Edit
Magoo, did they give you the option of a transfer plan? IF this is the school for you, you can work out a transfer. But why not go have a great time at another school, be a big fish there. Join the "Spielberg" club-make them wonder why they ever let you get away.
Hugs, what do your parents suggest?
By Charmedxgal408 (Charmedxgal408) on Monday, April 05, 2004 - 09:52 pm: Edit
i read everyone saying their stats and stuff but maybe it's the essays too..cuz i think that's what got me in. seriously w/ my 3.17 UW and 12160 SATs and 600-700 SATIIs.
i forgot the site but there's this selection process/review process thingie at UCSB that hella explains it. they rank you from exceptional, good, typical, blah blah contribution to their schoool. so i think it has more to do w/ your personality sometimes.
By Anton (Anton) on Tuesday, April 06, 2004 - 10:47 pm: Edit
Hey I got 4.1 UC weighted GPA, 1280 on SAT, SAT 2: 660 Writing, 760 Math 2c, 770 physics and I got rejected from UCSD.
I got into Davis and Cal Poly.
You think I have a chance in an appeal for UCSD ?
