Can I appeal to UCSD with a different, much less selective major than I already put down? Or say that I would go there even if I had a much less selective major ? (The original major I put down was really selective and may have been the reason I wasn't admitted... )

I had a friend do that several years ago w/ UCLA. He said that he 'accidentally' put down electrical engineering, when he should have been undeclared. He got in. This was back in the late 90's tho, so things may have changed.
