i calculated my AI with my current stat of being ranked 18 out of a class of 500, and then i calculed with my GPA of 4.0+... the calculations varied by at least 8 points, which is the difference of at least two classifications on the AI scale. i went from a 5 to a 7

Don't bother with the AI. It's in inaccurate indicator of your academic strength in the eyes of colleges.

In Michele A. Hernandez's "A is for Admission", she discusses those AI discrepancies and describes how schools' different ways of reporting GPA/rank help/hurt their applicants. For example, she says that those that rank by deciles are doing their students a disservice.
