Flash316, I take it you've never visited Lafayette? It's a beautiful --I would say, almost luxurious-- campus.
Used to have a reputation as a rich kid's, frat boy's school, but I think in recent years Lafayette has come up well in academics and selectivity. Engineering department is supposed to be very strong.
How were you notified of your acceptance - by regular US mail (sent abroad, I assume)? If so, was the envelope thin or fat?
Also, if you don't mind my asking, is your financial aid package all need-based, or did Lafayette throw some merit-based in there too?
Congratulations, btw!

Hi, I got in as well.
I am an international student from Cyprus. I applied RD.
SAT: 1400
GPA: 3.70
TOEFL: 290
Though not my first choice, it seems like a very nice school that I am seriously considering attending =)
| By Flash316 (Flash316) on Thursday, March 18, 2004 - 06:56 pm: Edit |
thanks a lot gumbino!
I received my decision via e-mail. It should be arriving by the regular snail mail real soon.
I have electrical and computer engineering as my major.
My financial aid package is all need-based.
I am strongly considering Lafayette as my educational haven. Depends upon offers from other good schools!

Hmm, wonder if Lafayette notifies international students first, since you're from Nepal and Dillydils is from Cyprus (and Waterlogged got in ED).
My son says nothing in his email yet. We live in New Jersey.

Yes, that could be the case! But, none of my friends who have applied to Lafayette has received any decision whatsoever...
And about that merit-aid, US students are certainly considered for the prestigious Marquis Scholarship!

hey Dillydils, DId you apply for financial aid? If yes, how is the package?
So, which is your first choice school?

If so, did you get notified by email or by snail mail? Thanks.

Flash, I should add that besides having a beautiful campus, Lafayette seems to have happy students --in contrast to some other schools I've visited (e.g., MIT and Harvard), where a lot of students I saw seemed downright depressed.
Also, as you may already know, Lafayette students have small classes, a lot of attention from professors, and NO T.A.s (hugely important to us).
It's also one of the few small colleges that seems to have both a decent liberal arts program and an excellent engineering school.
I forgot that Marquis scholarships are just for U.S. citizens. Wonder why that is?
My son applied to Lafayette, and also to several other small LACs that don't have schools of engineering, but offer the 3/2 engineering program with Columbia -- as well as offering really great merit scholarship opportunities.
(We're not rich, but also not qualified for need-based aid, so son has sought out merit opportunities.)
Still haven't heard anything from Lafayette though.

Hi,
Yes I did apply for financial aid. I got 11,000, not sure about the package though, they didn't send me details. I'll keep you updated if something comes in the mail tomorrow. My first choice... well I have a bunch of first choices like Vassar, Colby, JHU, Tufts... We'll see on April 1st =)

Thank you very much Gumbino for your info!
Well, as far as I know, I am the only one from Nepal notified of an admission decision by Lafayette. So, i don't think Lafayette notifies
international students early. Maybe your son will get an admission decision by the last week of March.
Gumbino, since you have visited Lafayette already, can you provide me with a small info on the kind of place Easton, PA is? Its proximity
with the big cities?
How are 3/2 engineering degrees regarded as compared to the regular 4 year engineering degree?
Thank you in advance!

Flash, we live about 50 miles from Easton, but have gone there only once. Looked OK to me. Not a cultural mecca. It's an old factory town; the Crayola Crayon factory is still there, and everybody says it's fun to visit. It's about 70 miles from both NYC and Philadelphia. The city of Bethlehem (and Lehigh U.) is nearby, and is supposed to be a hip town. Lafayette College is up high on a hill overlooking Easton and the Delaware River.
The 3/2 program gives you guaranteed admission to Columbia SEAS (engineering and applied sciences) as long as you take the prescribed courses at an affiliated LAC and maintain a 3.0 average. You graduate with two diplomas -- one from your LAC and one from Columbia. (There's also a 4/2 program that awards a Masters in engineering from Columbia.) You can read about it here: http://www.engineering.columbia.edu/bulletin/ugrad/programs/cp.php
All I know about how this program is regarded is what Muhlenberg College says about it:
"Employers tend to look very favorably on students who graduate from these programs. Both engineering schools [Columbia U. and Washington U. in St. Louis] report that in recent years the dual degree students have had better job opportunities, with higher starting salaries, than students who go directly through traditional engineering programs.
"Employers value the reasoning, critical thinking, problem solving, and communications skills which students acquire at the liberal arts college. These skills, combined with the outstanding technical preparation from the engineering courses, make for an attractive job candidate."
Which ever school you choose, good luck, and I hope you have a great time in the United States!

Heh, waterlogged, I keep checking for new news too. Don't think RD acceptance letters have gone out to U.S. students. We're in NJ, and haven't got word yet by either mail or email.

Decisions began being mailed on Mon. but they will be mailed in batches going forward. The Easton post office can not handle that much mail at once. What do you all feel about Lafayette vs. F and M and why?

Heh. Son sort of got notified of acceptance today, but not by the usual letter.
He got a small invitation card in the mail, inviting him to a reception for accepted students at the house of an alumna and alumnus.
For those of you who did get a formal acceptance, did you get your announcement of financial aid or merit scholarship(s) in the same envelope?
