HELP ME! I have been accepted to UCLA with a BIology major. But i failed one of my classes last sememster. It was AP Calculus BC. i dropped it and am now taking a culture studies class. what does this mean to me? i wrote to them saying that i was mistakenly placed in that class but decided to stay to challegen myself, but i ended failing anyways. but last year, i did pas AP Calculus AB with an A and i did passed the AP Exam, so what do uthink??? i need an HONEST response. all my other grades are fine, its just that one. do u think imma my admissions is gonan get rebuked??? im panicking! please do help!

By Emo (Emo) on Wednesday, March 17, 2004 - 03:55 am: Edit

sorry for all the typos and mistakes, i was writing it in a rush, so don't im not ucla material! hehe

By Ubercollegeman (Ubercollegeman) on Wednesday, March 17, 2004 - 04:08 am: Edit

Let me get this straight. You got an A in Calc AB but an F in Calc BC? Also, if you got an A in Calc AB, then you were not "misplaced" in BC. In fact, I think you should have been placed in just a one-semester Calc C class.

I don't know. If I were an admissions officer, I'd be skeptical =/. The fact that all your other grades are okay helps, though. Well, good luck.

By Emo (Emo) on Wednesday, March 17, 2004 - 04:37 am: Edit

well i got an A but a B for the other semester......one of the main reasons why i failed BC was because the teacher NEVER taught! it was totally independent! and also, i think she had a grudge against me.

Calculus teachers can be an odd bunch, but this is a problem. Colleges like it when kids rise above situations like this and study on their own, find a tutor, etc. That shows an unusual degree of intitiative, maturity, etc. Still, they also understand that you are young and don't expect perfection. I would not blame others and make excuses. I think I would offer to take the class in summer school in a community college or on-line. You want to project that you understand that this would cause them to have doubts and that you are concerned and willing to fix things.

By Nikelaos (Nikelaos) on Wednesday, March 17, 2004 - 11:24 am: Edit

just because your sn is "emo," I'd revoke your admission.

haha jk, I don't think it'll be that big of a problem... I don't even know if UCs look at 2nd semester grades..?

By Ellemenope (Ellemenope) on Wednesday, March 17, 2004 - 12:04 pm: Edit

You have to send your final transcript after graduation to the UCs. So it is not like you will be able to hide your failing grade. The question is whether they will actually rescind your acceptance.

I have heard of examples at my Ds high school where a UC either yanked (or threatened to yank) a scholarship because of senioritis. I haven't heard of an example where the actual acceptance was yanked. I think you are smart to alert them to the problem now. I'd hate to have an acceptance yanked come June or July.

Keep us informed about what the admissions office says.

By Carolyn (Carolyn) on Wednesday, March 17, 2004 - 01:22 pm: Edit

If you've already completed the failed class, and you need the credit to meet the UC a-g requirements, you will have to take it again and pass it over the summer in order to start at UCLA in the fall. Complete details are available at:
http://www.ucop.edu/pathways/infoctr/qr/qrf_min_moreschol.html

Since it's an AP class, I assume you will need to take it at a community college. Call the UCLA admissions office to confirm this.

I dont need this other year of math....i have over 5 years already. oh, please wish me good luck! its my dream school

By Emo (Emo) on Wednesday, March 17, 2004 - 07:11 pm: Edit

i was planning on taking it at community college but thanks to these california budget cuts they had to cancel the class! grr...

By Carolyn (Carolyn) on Thursday, March 18, 2004 - 11:28 am: Edit

Emo,
Read the site I gave carefully and verify this but they seem to be saying that if the class you fail isn't needed to meet UC a-g requirements, it doesn't have to be made up. But again, CALL AND VERIFY THIS with UCLA.

Emo -

Did you call UCLA? The sooner you deal with this , the better. They will see your grade in any case, so might as well get it over with.

btw, you can also contact them by filling out an on-line form

got to the Admitted Students page, then new students guide. Report changes is one of the options.

Do let us know, what happens.
Wishing you the best.

By Emo (Emo) on Friday, March 19, 2004 - 12:18 am: Edit

i have already notified them. first i did do the online form, but then i called to see if they have received it, and it happens that the online form isn't working. so they gave me an email address and i emailed them there yesterday. so now im just patiently waiting to hear from them.....hopefully its good news ^_^

By Deferreddude (Deferreddude) on Friday, March 26, 2004 - 01:25 am: Edit

Are you really serious? Why would they yank your acceptance so quickly? Decisions just came out a few weeks ago. I would think that they would allow you to retake the class or at least see if you do better during the second semester. That really sucks man.

By Deferreddude (Deferreddude) on Friday, March 26, 2004 - 01:27 am: Edit

Did they tell you over the phone that your decision was taken away? I think you should just call them over and over and try to make a great excuse as to why you failed the class (i.e. family issues, extenuating circumstances, etc.) Don't let them take away your admission without a fight!

By Crazichic98 (Crazichic98) on Friday, March 26, 2004 - 01:47 am: Edit

im so scared now. i failed both AP chem and AP Calc AB. but im still in those classes and i'm doing okay in them. I haven't written them a letter yet or even contacted them. i think i should do so soon. YIKES! the only difference is that im worried about UC-Davis, irvine and SC.

i already got rejected fr UCLA

By Anxious_Mom (Anxious_Mom) on Friday, March 26, 2004 - 01:47 am: Edit

yikes. they didn't even give you a plan to make it up over the summer?

By Anxious_Mom (Anxious_Mom) on Friday, March 26, 2004 - 01:59 am: Edit

Crazichic98

Do you mean that you failed 1st semester, but are doing better now? Could you talk with your teachers and ask if you could do extra credit, or re-take any exams, or if there is anything you could do to improve your grade. Even though the semester may be over, that grade may not be set in stone - at our local HS teachers have total discretion to go back and change a grade by just filling out a form, and they don't even need to give a reason why. Many teachers would be very understanding, if they see that you have stuck it out and are doing OK now. If you haven't done that, do that first - beg the teachers. If there is any chance that you could get the grades changed, work on that before contacting the UCs. After all, if your grades are fine when they see the final transcript, that is what counts.

By Emo (Emo) on Friday, March 26, 2004 - 02:16 am: Edit

i did fail the first semester, and it was recommned for me to drop it, so i did. i am now taking some other latin class instead. i did write to them but i told them the truth and i didnt make a fake excuse like many do *now i wish i had done that* i simple told them that the class was harder that i expected it to be since the teacher made us learn independently and i failed...my first bad grade. the reason why they responded so fast is because i wrote to them imediately after they send out their decisions, i think i wrote to them march 13th. cause i heard its better for u to tell them ASAP, cause u have more choices, but i guess that wasnt the case for me. as for my college plans, i think imma end up at ucsd, well at least i have a dorm with an ocean view...

By Heartsofpaper (Heartsofpaper) on Friday, March 26, 2004 - 02:23 am: Edit

aw, that's harsh.

but look at it this way, ucsd is awesome when it comes to bio. it probably even rivals ucla.

By Sdgirl (Sdgirl) on Friday, March 26, 2004 - 03:20 am: Edit

Emo, I don't think UCSD is bad at all. It's actually the second best science school in the nation. Ucsd is climbing up the ladder. I think it's a good thing that you consider going to Ucsd now because it is a good school. I am currently a student there and i love it. I love the peaceful weather, and the students there are very genuine and honest. I think UCLA is overrated.

By Deferreddude (Deferreddude) on Friday, March 26, 2004 - 10:43 am: Edit

The second best science school in the nation is MIT. Caltech is the best one.

By Ptm (Ptm) on Friday, March 26, 2004 - 10:57 am: Edit

Won't UCSD revoke your admission too? Did you inform them of your F?

- PTM

By Emo (Emo) on Friday, March 26, 2004 - 04:50 pm: Edit

i told UCSD already, they sent me an email saying thanks for letting us know, we will add this to your file and thats it. they didnt say they will review my application to c if im being revoke or not, like ucla said, so i guess ucsd is ok with my fail? well at least i hope. oh, and i accidently sent in my SIR For ucsd, can this be taken back? im still waiting to hear from a couple more colleges before making my final decision.

By Behindthemyth (Behindthemyth) on Saturday, March 27, 2004 - 03:19 am: Edit

Actually this happened to my cousin last year, he got an F in an AP English Composition class first semester and he got his acceptance revoked from UCLA, but he talked to them and had his counselor talk to them (huge hassle) and they eventually let him go to UCLA. You shouldn't give up, there are other ways (especially since you have such great stats!)

Good luck! Remember that UCSD is a GREAT school for biology too.

By John2004 (John2004) on Saturday, March 27, 2004 - 03:29 am: Edit

That is horrible!!! They actually rescinded your admission even though you dropped the class?!? Will 2 or 3 C's (out of 9 classes...4 APs, 1 Honors) make an offer of admission taken away????

By Coeurdoux (Coeurdoux) on Saturday, March 27, 2004 - 09:22 am: Edit

this girl who's a senior last year got her admittance revoked from UCSC because she got a D in English.

By Emo (Emo) on Saturday, March 27, 2004 - 03:18 pm: Edit

well i decided to discuss this situation with ucla. is there a chance they will give me admissions again?

By Wutdeh (Wutdeh) on Saturday, March 27, 2004 - 03:28 pm: Edit

yeah. get your counselor in on it also.

By Kinkbicycles04 (Kinkbicycles04) on Saturday, March 27, 2004 - 03:29 pm: Edit

There is always a chance, plus you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Best of luck.

By Booboo2 (Booboo2) on Saturday, March 27, 2004 - 03:47 pm: Edit

Emo, how long did it take for UCLA to respond to your situation?

By Emo (Emo) on Saturday, March 27, 2004 - 05:31 pm: Edit

they were quite fast, they got back to me in about 9 working days.

By Indiawest (Indiawest) on Saturday, March 27, 2004 - 06:04 pm: Edit

Hi Emo. I just read your post all the way through and I really feel for you. I had gotten admitted to Cal (Berkeley) after High School but family and financial reasons prevented me from attending my dream school. Thus, you and I share a somewhat similar experience.

I wanted to let you know that most people correlate (prestigious) college graduates as intellectuals. Therefore, many think they are wiser than others, but that is not true. All material knowledge has a shelf life and even people who have attended Harvard forget what they learned after graduation. Hang in there, do your best, and don't let petty UCLA admissions officers tell you that you are not worthy.

Remember also that there are very successful people in the world who went to schools less prestigious as the UCs (and some didn't even go to college or high school) and still ended up well respected and rich. Keep your chin up and when you talk to UCLA, don't beg them for anything. Make them see that you are capable. Good luck.

By Indiawest (Indiawest) on Saturday, March 27, 2004 - 06:04 pm: Edit

One more thing...

By Indiawest (Indiawest) on Saturday, March 27, 2004 - 06:25 pm: Edit

Also, I wanted to add some advice since you still have a chance at admission to UCLA. Just because I have said that you shouldn't beg for admissions, doesn't mean I don't think you should give up trying. If at any time you think my advice is weak, ignore it and forget it.

If I were in your place I would make sure I'd get help from as many influential people as I could (by that I mean, principal, teachers, counselors, etc.). These people are your well wishers (yes, even the principal you don't know very well) and you shouldn't be ashamed to ask them for help. Maybe they can write a letter on your behalf to UCLA admissions (they write enough letters of recommendations for other students). Getting letters from adults who have faith in you will help show officers that you are worthy of admission.

Make sure you frame your words carefully when writing to UCLA or talking to anyone you seek help from. In fact, it wouldn't hurt to write down all the reasons why you think you should be admitted and bring these points out when (and only when) convincing anyone who maybe hesitant to speak on your behalf (i.e. principal or someone who doesn't know you too well).

And finally, remember that your success in admissions is also the high schools success and be honest when seeking aid. Good luck again.

By Reverie (Reverie) on Saturday, March 27, 2004 - 06:27 pm: Edit

If you really, really want to go to UCLA, keep with the emails. Promise them you'll make up the class, etc.

Contact your school counselor and make arrangements for letters and other stuff.

By Emo (Emo) on Sunday, March 28, 2004 - 02:11 pm: Edit

i would like to thank everyone for their words of support, they really mean a lot to me, especially during this hard time
