Is there any way to write one without being cliche? Has anyone submitted one? I'm thinking about it but I am unsure as to whether or not it could be effective.

The community service that I do is for a very specific, personal reason. I wrote an essay, from the heart, no punches pulled, about the connection between the reason and the service. IMHO, it is a very good essay.
I think that if you were to approach it from a similar and equally vulnerable place, it would be effective.
