Mark down Black if you want AA benefits, Asian if you want the harder chance of getting in but the knowledge you got in without AA.

Uh, Tim? Pakistani isn't an Asian heritage!
| By Tim (Tim) on Sunday, January 26, 2003 - 10:07 pm: Edit |
You're right actually, but I'm assuming a White/Black/Hispanic/Asian/Native American choice. I know some places allow Indian/Pakistani but some places don't have that.

well for yale and such, they marked asian, specify, and in that list they have indian/pakistani.
anyway, i marked black and other, and under other i specified pakistani. i marked both. will it give me an edge?

Tanzania said that ‘Pakistani is not Asian heritage’ !!!!!!!!!
Then what is considered as Asian? Only ‘Mongolian’ origin. Then What is Indians , paks and Arabs considered as ???

Ravi:
Under an old, discredited system there were three races: Caucasian, Negro, and Mongolian. Technically, Indians and Arabs were actually grouped as Caucasians, but popularly Indians were considered Asians. This system is hella discredited since it was just a ridiculous social construct, but a vestige of it remains whenever you see racial classifications of "White/Black/Asian/Hispanic/Native American."

yes, yes, it is discredited.
for purposes of AA, however, is this true? I have heard that if you are 1/16 native american, you are evaluated in the context of being (or "counted as") native american. for everything else, it's one half to qualify. is that true?

Tim -- you are correct about anthropological ethnic categories. however, i don't know of any college that uses them, although some will distinguish east asian (what used to be called "oriental") from south asian (indo/pak/sri lanka/bangladesh). Hispanics would fall into either caucasian or black. Middle easterners would also.
Frou -- there are generally no "cutoffs" for determining whether you qualify as a minority. the school will decide whether it wants to give you any preference they may accord for that group. For native american, specifically, the colleges usually require some proof of tribal affiliation (tribal membership). if you're not a tribal member, you're not going to get any preference as a native american. the apps ask if you are "enrolled," and if so which tribe, and based on my experience, some schools actually contact the tribe to check if you're registered.

The Indian subcontinent, the Arabian peninsula, the eastern half of the Turkish peninisula, and much of Russia are part of Asia for those who don't know their geography!Asia stretches from Israel and Turkey to Japan and Siberia. If you are from that huge area, you are asian. I'm a white Russian and technically I'm asian because I come from the Asian part of Russia.
"tanzania" is stupid. Pakistan is in Asia for your information.

Pakistanis are Asians. If you say Asian you tend to mean Pakistani,Indian,Sri Lankan and the 'brown folks' not yellow. Yellow is Oriental.
I am from the UK and on holidays in India....in both these countries as well as most countries i visited they think of India if u say Asia...
Japan,Korea,China is FAR EAST .....Iraq,Iran,Israel is MIDDLEAST
And yes technically speaking Asia covers all Asian countries starting with Russia and ending in Indonesia or somewhere near Australia but in everday life....Asian means someone from the Indian Subcontinent.
