I've read that some students have received letters from Nat'l Merit about achieving commended scholar status. Does anyone out there know what the cut off number is for that this year? I've read that in past years it has been 200, but that can change. Have others received these letters yet?

The cutoff number for this year's commended status--which is a NATIONAL number--is 200, according to someone who was told this by their guidance office. This has been the cutoff for the past several years (either 199 or 200, in that range). They take the top scoring 50,000 students who will go forward and who will at least get Commended status. After this point, the competition goes to the state level, and the cutoff for semi-finalist status will vary depending on the kinds of scores attained by the students *in your state*. In my state, MA, the cutoff was 222 last year. That's about as high as it gets. In other states, it may be in the lower 200's. It will be approximately the top .5% scorers in your state who will determine that cutoff.
