Anyone have any idea on if this is going to be positive or negative?

It could be positive because UC wants to help the money problem by receiving a higher tuition from those out of state.

It could be negative because of their dedication to admitting as many in state applicants as they could.

Seeing how the money problem has gotten so out of hand, I'm hoping they are going to be taking more out of state students.

Whatever happened to diversity being a good thing? :D

Flyguy, I seriously doubt if there will be a substantial increase in the number of out-of-state admits. Not only would it be politically suicidal, it would not make any financial sense since UCs dont really do much better than break-even (if that) on out-of-state students. UCs would rather deal with the reduced budgets by cutting back on the number of classes and other non-essential overheads.

They make 10k more for each one. That's extremely significant, or at least I would think so.

as an in-stater, i wouldn't mind paying more and getting accepted as opposed to not getting in. i'd be pretty angry if they did let in more in-staters.

I think the schools would be much better if they didn't take residency into account. Screw the quota system.

Penn State doesn't do it and they're just fine. :P

I don't know. I agree that in-staters should get in cause its their tax dollars, but it kinda screws me over. I guess I feel entitled to get in, not only b/c my father lives in CA and pays taxes, but so did my mother until the past 5 or so years. And I'm still considered out-of-state. Pfhhh... well there's nothing I can do now.

Flyguy, In-state students are subsidized at the rate of $14,000 per student per year. Thus even if out of state students pay $10,000 more, the UCs are still making a loss on them. The UCs would rather cut back on the student population and services or increase in-state tuition even more rather than shift the population in favor of out-of-staters. I am not trying to justify UCs actions - I am merely putting into context.

Still, I think that they should pick a more diverse student body..

Nonsense. The public education system in any given state is funded by the taxpayers in that state. It should be given, first and foremost, to the taxpayers in that state. They don't owe anything to the rest of the country.

Yeah well if that didn't hold true, you would see schools like UCLA, UCSD, and Berkeley held as highly as HYP today.

Flyguy - the problem with your thinking about diversity is that California is already the most ethnically diverse state in the country. There's plenty of diversity on UC campuses even if most students are in-state.

And, there are only about 7,000 out of state students in the entire UC system. Even if they doubled the amount of out of state students, that wouldn't put a dent in the effect of the state budget crisis on the UC budget.
