If you can't visit a certain school, a good idea is to log onto the livejournal community for that school. you can post questions for the students, or just see what they're like.

for Livejournals.. do a search of the school by communities I think.
For xangas.. search the name of the school thru blogrings..

Local communities are also a great way to find out about restaurants/events in places you're visiting. The beantownkids community recommended some great places to eat around Cambridge when I was visiting Boston.
