According to the Ivy League Statement, some schools not only send out "likely" letters, but may also mail "unlikely" letters. Is that true? Has anyone gotten one of those?
I would think that they would not go through the hassle of sending those out. What exactly is the benefit of mailing out a bunch of "unlikely" letters other than a whole bunch of paperwork and stamp fee?
One more thing, anyone received any type of statement from;
Cornell (CAS)
NYU
Vassar
Brown
Columbia
I didn't get one from Yale, as many of us here did, so I guess I won't be getting in.

You shouldn't assume that; most people who are accepted by these schools won't get likely letters ahead of time.
Where in the Ivy Statement does it mention "unlikely letters?" I'd never heard of that before.

Never heard of unlikely, doesn't make much sense. Cornell's likely letters came out at the end of the first week of March last year (at least the one we got from Engineering did.)

I doubt you'd thank so, if you were the recipient of one...

Haha, since you guys don't seem to believe in the existence of "unlikely" letters, I have pulled out the statement on the Cornell application, verbatim:
"Beginning in January and continuing until March 15, some institutions may advise an applicant of his or her chances of admission (e.g., "likely", "UNLIKELY", or "possible)."

Soulofheaven is right, and if you read the Ivy League policy statement, it has a similar description. Whether each Ivy chooses to give all of these types of notification is up to them.

Although they reserve the right to send out these letters, they don't have to.
I've never, ever heard of an Ivy sending out an unlikely letter - what's the point?

"Dear _______, I regret to inform you that it is highly unlikely you will be accepted to our amazingly fantastic and prestigious adademic institution, but we'll see how it goes eh?? Maybe we will change our minds, but again, that is highly unlikely.
Best wishes, and we wish you the best of luck,
Admissions Bastards,
hahahahahahaha
