Does anyone know anyone who has done this program? No one where we live seems to have heard of it.

By Collegeguy (Collegeguy) on Wednesday, January 14, 2004 - 09:54 pm: Edit

I applied.

Got shafted by NASA, got the nod from Stanford.

Conclusion: It's harder to get into SHARP than to get into Stanford.

i applied

got shafted by nasa, got the nod from Columbia

Conclusion: It's harder to get into SHARP than to get into Columbia.

STATS
1500, 770 Bio, 750 MathIIC, 740 Writing

LOL Godis.

STATS
1600, 800, 800, 800

Basically, they will reject you. But apply anyway. I ended up doing research that was more meaningful (and ultimately more prestigious) than SHARP, so no worries.

I just looked at the website... It sounds like prison!!

"In an effort to keep the Program experience equal for all students, visitations are not permitted, nor are Apprentices allowed to leave campus during the 8-week program, except for NASA SHARP-organized events. There are no exceptions."

I got into SHARP, it was great. I went this past summer (2003). Since am from New Jersey, there are no commuter components near me, so I attended the residential program at the University of New Mexico. I'd never been further west than Pennsylvania, so this was a big change.

We (a total of 24 students) stayed in the dormitories (which were surprisingly nice), and worked "40" hours a week in different places around the campus. I say "40" because it was actually more like 25. It really depends on who your mentor is and how strict they are. I was working with a student-led organization called NASA Develop. I did research on remote sensing applications of GPS satellite signals. LOTS of computer program; I had to teach myself a new programming language!

Other students did work in chemistry, biology, 10 of them were in the robotics lab (which was insanely laid-back and fun), and other areas.

My stats at the time I applied were:
1470 PSAT, 4.4 GPA

No real formal science awards or competitions, just a lot of personal enjoyment in studying it. I do come from a semi-urban school however, which may have influenced their accepting me. The same day that I found out I was accepted to SHARP,(which was in April) I learned that I had scored a 1600 on the SAT. That was a great day lol!

So, overall, I loved NASA SHARP. Go for it... in your application, show how much you love science, and your potential to work for NASA in the future. Remember that they're doing this to train future employees!

There's a WISE scholarship for women.
I think a 10 week NASA research program. It's for Spelman College in Georgia, but I still don't know much about the school...

Airforce:

Don't worry about your SATs... some of the people I met in SHARP hadn't taken them yet or hadn't done well on them. Your credentials sound great, but remember, they're looking to help out kids that wouldn't normally have a lot of science/math opportunities. That doesn't count you out tho. Show them that you know you have a lot to gain by going to this program. Make sure they know that you're not just doing it in order to have another thing to put on your college resume. If you're really passionate about math and science, tell them about that.

Omg...this program sounds impossibel to get into. AHH...my PSATs are only 1230, and i'm a sophomore already. Would having a 4/4 GPA help at all? I told them i want to become a doctor since i had a tumor and all that stuff..so is the essay really important? wow..soryr i'm just blabbing
