I have been planning to major in TV/Film, more towards film, and I question whether or not I will be able to get into some of the more competitive programs like NYU and Syracuse. My guidance counselor said that I would easily get into many colleges but wasn't sure if I would get into the communication schools within them. His advice was then to enroll as undecided and move into the TV/Film major when it cam time to declare. I don't know if this is right though because a few schools I have read about do not allow transfers from that college into their TV/Film programs. Is this an ordinary practice? What can I do to get around it? Also any less known schools that anyone knows about with good TV/Film programs would be helpful.

I think that the advice about enrolling as undecided and then tranferring carries an element of risk if you absolutely want to get into the TV/Film program. For example, Syracuse's Newhouse will accept some transfers from other colleges, like the College of Arts & Sciences, but generally demands a 3.5 GPA, and maybe other accomplishments. That doesn't sound too bad, but the school attracts strong students and achieving a competitive GPA might not be assured. If you would be happy in another major, great... but if the ONLY reason you would go to Syracuse or NYU is for the TV/Film major, I'd think twice about enrolling if you don't get admitted to the school you want outright. Both are great schools, of course, and you can get a wonderful education in many departments. (I don't know how NYU handles its TV/Film admissions, every college is different.)
