So heres the deal: My dad is 1/4 White, making me 1/8 white. Otherwise, I am completely Chinese. I don't know how I would identify myself. Would it affect my decision if I checked caucausian and chinese or just chinese? Which would give me a better chance? It seems more interesting to be multi ethnic :) and I know it can hurt you to be chinese b/c of AA.

stupediest question ever!

By Tlo (Tlo) on Thursday, January 01, 2004 - 09:06 pm: Edit

maybe so, but I don't know, and with AA it could make a difference. I am applying to schools with like 14% Asian BTW

Strategy #1

Use your ethnicity to your benefit. Who cares if you are semi-Asian, part-Asian or one hundredth -Asian, colleges only care about STATISTICS and their ranking in next year's U.S. News and World Report.

This is not the time to be fighting the system!

Strategy #2

Check out ethnic statistics in the Princeton or Barron college guides.

As a rule of thumb, those schools with more than 5% Asians will give you a run for your money.

The trick is to apply to schools with 0% to about 4% Asians, more or less. Unless your stats are tops, keep away from schools that their Asian quotas fill up fast.

Strategy #3

As a last resource, Pay full fare! Colleges will overlook high SAT's and GPA's if you talk to the "right People" at the admissions office.

After all, Colleges in America are a business first, all other stuff is just spin.

haha...one of my friend moved in from SOUTH AFRICA 7 years back. Hes white ( british-south african), but techinically speaking hes African-American.........yet hes white.....still hasnt made up his mind on what race to choose.

Now thats a good race concerning question...isnt it?

I always have trouble when applying to colleges, or anything. When I have to say what ethnicity I am I don't don't know which one to pick. My dad is black and my mom is chinese. So I'll pick either one or choose the "other" option.
I feel all colleges should have the multi-racial option, blah.

By Nikelaos (Nikelaos) on Friday, January 02, 2004 - 12:49 am: Edit

most colleges do have a multi-racial option... there are very few I applied to (1, really) which made me chose either white OR asian. which, I think, is horrible.

I'm proudly a hapa. A culture in its own right. I'm not going to let myself get friggin pigeonholed for the sheer statistical convenience of it.

nikelaos..i dont agree..most colleges dont have a multi-racial option. practically for all my schools ive had to check the other box.
