Discus: College Admissions: December 2003 Archive: "JAN 1st DEADLINE"????
By Gymnasium1 (Gymnasium1) on Monday, December 29, 2003 - 06:28 pm: Edit

So, when they say "deadline: postmarked by January 1st 2004", does that mean you gotta send it in on Dec. 31 or earlier...or just that you gotta send it before Jan. 2nd?...i.e.: finish it by 11:59 pm on Jan. 1st...it's not late if I get it postmarked "Jan. 1st" is it?...
...essentially, I just wanna know when I gotta get my stuff in the mail/submitted on-line so that it's all on time...Thanks.

Jan 1st at 11:59 would be late, since the post office isn't open. Online though i'm not sure heh.

My counselor report is going to be a few days late, I'm not worried. Everything else is in on time.

As long as your main stuff is in I figure they'll be leiniet (sp) I mean its not like they pick yours out of the stack of thousands and decide to vote right then and there.

Postmarked by Jan 01 means you gotta get your applications "postmarked" or stamped or mailed by the postal office. It does not have to arrive by Jan 01.

Ask Information when you're in the Postal Office and ask them to define "postmarked by" for ya.

Hey wise@ss, he meant if it was postmarked on the 1st, is that acceptable. The only problem being, I don't think the post office is open on New Years. Otherwise, postmark by a date means that its ok to send it out on that date.

Yes yes...I am applying on line for all of them...so it must be submitted @ 11:59 Jan 1st or earlier no?

By Starmel (Starmel) on Monday, December 29, 2003 - 08:40 pm: Edit

You can send it in by 11:59 in the time zone that the school is in for it to be on time.

but be careful, the night before it is due, the application site is going to be really really slow

I wouldn't be too worried about it getting in a week or two late, I'm sure they are expecting a lot of procrastinators. Colleges want tuition money. It's just you would have to risk having any vacancies available for the program or major you chose. I'm mailing my essay tomorrow and it's due jan 1st.

Is creating a username online considered post marking it?

By Tvh2k (Tvh2k) on Monday, December 29, 2003 - 10:09 pm: Edit

No, submitting it online is considering postmarking it....once you press the submit button and confirm a million and a half times, then its "postmarked", or submitted.

As to usna_reject's statement, colleges certainly consider when they receive your application. Unless ure a 1600, A+ student (and even then sometimes not), any competitive college is going to give their spots to people who actually did their applications on time, first. Of course if they still have places open afterwards, anyone with the $$ is fair game.

Thank you all.

Not for college but for a congressional nomination from my state senator I turned my application in a couple days late and he still nominated me, and he could only nominate 10 people from the whole state for each academy:) i got very very lucky.

For UIUC they just changed the due date to January 7th! yay! I guess because the online application site was down for a week.

MIT is gonna accept online apps into january as well.

Hmmm...I'm reluctant to risk anything late...Mostly becuase it would mean immediate death by torture of incessant nagging by my parents.

I thought if they say 1/1 is postmarked-deadline, then postmarked on 1/2 is ok if not online.. is it? Since it's the first working day after 1/1.

By Gymnasium1 (Gymnasium1) on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 - 11:10 am: Edit

I would say no...I've gathered that the enveloped has to be stamped Jan. 1 or earlier...
...and I'm pretty sure the post office is closed either today and/or tomarrrow...But I'm relly not sure there.

By Ndbisme2 (Ndbisme2) on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 - 11:27 am: Edit

The post office told me mail will cannot be postmarked Jan 1 because they're closed. I'm rushing to have everything ready today. Damn procrastination! Its like a sick joke embeded in my genes!

Eh.. I myself am I kind of nervous. I didn't really decide to apply for John Hopkins until this Christmas break so I'm turning in my Evalution and Report a couple of days late. I'm hoping that they just think that I "forgot" it (hehehe...).

I'm just hoping that that doesn't lower my chances. I need all the help I can get with my grades and scores.

By Tvh2k (Tvh2k) on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 - 11:59 am: Edit

Well let's just say if we were playing "are you nervous", I would be out. My post office closes at 5pm tonite!

JHS extened my deadlines to Jan 31. HAHA

Ugh...why do high school guidance counselors encourage students to wait until the start of senior year to start these damn applications?...we had all summer...I would've started then but no one told me they'd be so involved and time consuming. I hope a junior reads this and get his or her butt in gear this summer...good luck to all.

By Tvh2k (Tvh2k) on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 - 12:25 pm: Edit

Except that most juniors dont even read CC - college is a scary, intimidating word in junior year.

....and the clock ticks on
