my school, for some reason, put us on an 8 point GPA scale a few years ago. it makes it really hard to compare our schools' GPAs to other schools. so i'm curious, how do yall calculate your W/UW GPAs?

thanks!

We get 4 for an A, 3 for a B, 2 for a C and so on. For an AP class (weighted), you get 5 for an A, 4 for a B and so on.

To get the most accurate comparison, it's best you ask your counselor or someone in your school administration how it is that you calculate a GPA out of 4.

thanks kode...does your school weight an honors course or does the same scale apply for honors and regular courses?

at our school, its 4 for an A, 3 for a B, etc
for honors, its 4.5 for an A, 3.5 for a B, etc
for AP, its 5 for an A, 4 for a B, etc

Most schools have certain honors courses weighted, and certain others not.

Generally, all honors in 11th and 12th grade are weighted. All honors math after geometry (Algebra 2 and above) is weighted. 4th year/5th year honors foreign languages are weighted. Honors sciences that include labs (Physics, Chemistry, Biology are the main ones) are weighted.

Kindvl,

Your school's system sounds like the UC weighting system, which is more complicated than most.

The unfortunate truth is that each school weights in a different way. Some do not weight at all. Some use differing weights for AP versus regular honors. Some don't weight all honors etc.

If you want to see the most complicated system I've seen, look up New Trier High School. Just google new trier weighted GPA and look at the first link. It is amazing.

So, as others have said, the ONLY way to know how to compute weighted GPA is to ask your school.

I attend New Trier High School, and i dont find the GPA system that complicated. It just rewards kids for taking honors and AP classes rather than accelerated classes. An "A" in an accelerated class is worth 4.67, an "A" in an honors is 5.33, and an "A" in an AP class is a 5.67
