how do colleges know if you learn for the sake of learning or just to look good for colleges? i mean people that learn for the sake of learning take college courses, do contests....but people can emulate these habits and do it also for the sake of putting it on their apps..

so is there any way colleges can REALLY tell who "loves learning" and who lives his life to put things on his app?

but then why do they always say "we know who really has a passion and we know the kids that love to learn?"

just curious, any more ideas?

There will always be the upper bar to surpass. If everyone's doing a contest that only the motivated students used to do, these motivated ones will find new items to do. Then the others will try to catch-up, and the cycle continues. I predict that AP's will be finished by junior year by students of the class of 2010 (awards like Siemen's AP Scholar only exacerbate the situation). Well, I don't if it's exacerbate because others might think it's a positive thing.

At the high school level I would really think it doesn't matter. Most people want to get into a good college so the classes you take (APs or non-APs) won't really show your desire to learn. I believe that'll come out in your Extra curricular activities: that said, don't go out there and begin to participate in a slew of ECs that don't mean anything to you, just to show that you like to learn.
Do the things you love, and that's more than enough.
