approx. how many recs are you supposed to ask a teacher to write? do colleges accept copies? thnx.

Typically you ask each teacher (typically 2 or 3) to write 1 statement of evaluation (or letter of rec as some call it) on offical school letterhead, and then copy this and attach it to the teacher evaluation forms from each school.

Your application should tell you the minimum amount it wants, but you should read into it b/c UCs get annoyed when ppl send recs in (b/c they don't want them) and just rip them up. Do you mean copies that you've made yourself? If you need copies, you should ask your teacher to print an extra one b/c schools (USC, NYU) ask you to sign a waiver so that you aren't able to view the rec before it's sent.

ok, but are recs usually handwritten or can it be typed up by the teacher? cuz i would imagine a copy of a handwritten one would look ugly on the app
