Stanford has a little sentence at the end of its essay section that says "You may attach one additional page to tell us anything else you'd like us to know about you. -- This is optional."
Do most people do this?

Only if they are good writers. Otherwise, it'd be like suicide.

ummm... it's not an extra essay. it's like, if you want to explain a slump in grades, tell them something else don't already know about you (cancer survivor), etc. call them and make sure.
