I just found out today that I qualified for this. I live in Maryland and I was just one point below the cutoff so I didn't quality for National Merit. But how is the National Achievement Award viewed by colleges?

National Achievement is viewed very favorably. Colleges are very interested in attracting outstanding minority applicants. Many colleges that offer scholarships for National Merit Finalists also offer the same scholarships to National Achievement Finalists. Congratulations and good luck on your college search.

Why are there so many people from Maryland on this board? I'm from Maryland too... are we just way smarter/obssessed with colleges than everyone else or what? Would you happen to be a Montgomery County person as well? Mwahaha... that'd be funny.

What is the difference between National Achievement Award and national Merit Finalist? I've not heard of the former. (I'm new to this entire process; my S is my oldest and a senior.)

The National Achievement program is administered by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation for black students.

A similar program also exists for Hispanic students.

I also qualified for the National Achievement Semi-Finalist standing also. I would like to know what schools offer large scholarships to National Achievement Finalists.
